Lenovo Legion 7 review: A premium gaming laptop that excels

Only one of the two M.2 slots supports PCIe Gen4 speeds; the other slot is only Gen3. Very odd, that! And a deal breaker for me. That means a RAID-0 config will be limited to Gen3 speeds, nullifying any advantage to running RAID-0. Bummer. USB-C 3.2 gen 2 with DP 1.4(left and rear, with reas supporting PD), 1x USB-C 3.2(right), 3x USB-A 3.2, ethernet, HDMI 2.1 There’s no good way to fix this except to maybe use Throttlestop and limit the IccMax while on battery, which would limit the TDP. If I get any good settings, I’ll be sure to post them here.First is the iCue software. If you use it to customize your keyboard settings, it launches some nasty services that kill your battery life. The only way to stop this is to manually stop the services or uninstall iCue. It’s super annoying so I just uninstalled it. The last major hardware item to cover is the SSDs. There are two of them on this model, 1TB each. They are also in RAID 0 for a boost in performance. But is it worth it? I’m going to lean towards no… W (~3 h 33 min of use)– heavy browsing in Chrome, Better Performance Mode, screen at 50%, Wi-Fi ON; There’s a huge flaw in this software though, and that is with the battery drain it causes. As I said, the software was built for desktops, so the programmers probably didn’t have battery efficiency in mind. I’ll dig more into this in the Battery section below, but iCue added a 20-40 watt constant drain on my unit. Disabling the iCue service or uninstalling the software solves the problem.

The laptop's camera quality is very poor. My face was blurry, pixelated, and a lot of details on my tattoos and beard were missing. I had trouble accurately capturing bright colors from my LG CX’s rainbow-colored screen saver, which could be seen behind me. When I tried capturing footage in a brighter room, I noticed how much blur was removed. But the better lighting only makes the pixelation more noticeable. Software and Warranty on the Lenovo Legion 7The rest of these gaming benchmarks are remarkable though. The 165W TGP certainly gives this machine a performance boost over many of the other RTX 3080 models out there. Compared to the Razer Blade 15 I just tested, there’s a 10-15% performance boost, and that’s not even considering that this model has 11% more pixels to drive on the screen. Here’s a separate article comparing a few RTX 3080 laptops at different powers. The crosshair in the Legion logo on the lid also glows with RGB lightning too, creating a cohesive glow that will be the envy of your PC gaming rivals. The Legion 7 is pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to gaming laptops. It’s driven by the potent combination of the latest AMD Ryzen processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU. The display, meanwhile, is a 16in 2,560 x 1,600 (165Hz) number, with a slightly square aspect ratio of 16:10. There are three removable shields surrounding the RAM and storage, two of which can be unscrewed with a similar screwdriver. Once those are off, you will see dual slots for M.2 SSDs on either side, and one already preinstalled (you can configure with two drives when you buy, or add more later). To access the RAM, you can just pull off the shielding with your fingertips. Battery Life on the Lenovo Legion 7

Update2: 2022 updates of the Lenovo Legion 7 series are available now, in both Intel and AMD variants. Our full review of the 2022 Legion 7i series is available here. Specs sheet as reviewed– Lenovo Legion 7i 2021 The sound is pretty good though, for a gaming laptop. After some tweaking with the Equalizer in Nahimic, I was able to achieve good sound, with good highs and adequate mids. The bass was also decent and I could detect frequencies as low as 100Hz. By making a .bat file with the following text, I was able to load a static per-key RGB setting that I desired and then run that batch file to kill the process. This, in result, prevents the severe battery drain that the iCUE service causes, but still allows me to have custom colors that are not the default ones baked into the firmware. Here’s the .bat contents:

With Hybrid mode enabled, the laptop uses regular Optimus, which supports FreeSync. But in this mode the graphics are passed through the iGPU on their way to the laptop’s main display, so your performance will be slightly lower in some loads and games. Hardware and performance
