About this deal

Build quality is top notch. The headphones feel solid and the simple, all-mechanic build (no glue is used) make them appear sturdy and resistant. Meze nailed it when it comes to materials and there’s no part of the 99 Classics that feel cheap, flimsy or inadequate.

Meze Audio - Sound. Comfort. Design. True high-end.

Meze is relatively new Romanian company and 99 Classics is their much talked about model in several forums. They are carefully designed with choice of premium materials like wood and metal. Having spent about a week with them here is my opinion about them: Having previously reviewed the original Empyrean, which remains one of my all-time favorite headphones; the LIRIC has big shoes to fill in as an understudy to the flagship. Meze continues to innovate, and this collaboration includes Rinaro, which has produced quality products since WW2. On history alone, you could spend a fair word or seven, so that will be infiltrated throughout the review, as necessary.

Introduction

What remained im my memory is about the stage (strangely, because normally I do not care too much about it. Maybe because my current lineup gives me good enough result). Sound-wise, considering the price, it’s pretty much impossible to criticize the 99 Classic. They offer great value and punch well above their weight. Wrapping around your ear, the 99 Classics are not only comfortable but isolate you from the outside world – letting you hear even more detail. The memory foam ear pads supply just the right amount of pressure and are finished with PU leather for a luxury feel. The headband is self-adjusting and broad enough for a comfortable fit.

Mids: extremely clear, like I never heard some of my music, even with my reference HP, the sony MDR-Z1R, hearing instrumental cues I never heard before with such a crystal clarity like a Cembalo continuo line in Albinonis Concertos Op. 10 [I solisti Venetia|Claudio scimone|Albinoni, Tomaso: Concertos Op. 10|ERATO], voixes and strings sounded sweet. Come with a sturdy hard case (headphones fit in even when the cable is attached) that looks good and is very protective. I’ve had these headphones for well over a year and they may have played music for over 300 or 400 hours now. I tested them with various sources throughout time; for the purpose of this review, I used an Aune M1s, a Topping DX7 with its own amplifier or in conjunction with a Head ‘n’ Hifi Objective2 amplifier and a Little Dot MKIII SE. Meze 99 Classics It’s a great modern take on a classic design and has enough sleek touches to make the 99 look elegant and classy. The company offers a few different color options, but the walnut and gold were the most eye-catching to us. I believe that the simplest way to describe the sound of 99 Classics is – bassy, fun and energetic. It’s nowhere close being neutral or analytical, focusing more on a huge dose of fun and being just easy to listen to.Midrange on the Liric is quite good if maybe a little uneven. For instance, when listening to a piano some of the notes seemed to have less weight than others. I didn’t delve into this though as I only noticed it on a couple of occasions. Vocals are fairly well done but there were occasions where singers could have a bit of a pinched nose quality.
