What they do contain is Potassium Alum, which Salt of the Earth explains is from the aluminium salt family. Does Salt of the Earth deodorant work? The base ingredients include tapioca starch for moisture absorption and sodium bicarbonate for odour control. It also contains a range of natural fragrances including patchouli oil. There are several scents to choose from.
VEGAN FRIENDLY - The entire Salt of the Earth range is 100% vegan and approved by both the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society. The company says its products are 100% natural, free from preservatives, alcohol, artificial fragrance and palm oil, and are registered with The Vegan Society. This product is a crystal made from potassium alum - a natural mineral salt - and sits on the surface of the skin in a microscopic layer, where it kills bacteria. Ammonium alum is another one you'll commonly find in this type of product.
It's worth remembering that natural ingredients can still cause skin reactions. For example, bicarbonate of soda can irritate the skin and cause itchiness, especially if used after shaving, and some essential oils that are commonly found in natural deodorants might also cause skin irritation. There's a range of unisex scents available, largely based on essential oils such as peppermint, citrus, rosemary and bergamot, as well as gender-specific options. Natural deodorants are claimed to be kinder to skin by using largely naturally derived ingredients.
Be prepared for a transition period in which your armpits get used to the switch from antiperspirant to natural deodorant - and don't give up in the first few weeks of use. Made from nothing but pure mineral salt, the classic crystal deodorant is the O.G. product and still going strong over 20 years later – so we jumped at the chance to put it to the test.
The brand claims Akt, developed by two West End dancers, has been tested on more than 1,000 professional dancers and athletes. It's claimed to be plastic, aluminium and cruelty-free and to absorb both wetness and odours (although it stops short of classing itself as an antiperspirant). Potassium Alum is different from aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium, which are regulated antiperspirant drugs found in many products, made specifically to clog pores and inhibit a person’s natural ability to sweat. Dr Olioso says: 'I suspect this is more a case of people becoming more aware of and getting used to their own smell and how much they sweat - things they may have become dissociated from because of many years of using conventional products.' Having already been through that, using this deodorant was a breeze. For everyday gentle activity, we stayed completely dry and odour-free. Bearing in mind that deodorant is simply a product that reduces body odour, then yes: Salt of the Earth is absolutely effective. However, many of us tend to use the term 'deodorant' as a catch-all for products that are also antiperspirants – aka formulas that plug your pores and stop you from sweating. Himalayan salt is said to contain the same 84 trace minerals and elements that are essential to the human body, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. This salt is recognised for its beautiful pink colour, high mineral content, and its therapeutic properties. Himalayan salt is a pure, hand-mined salt that is derived from ancient sea salt deposits in the foothills of Himalaya found from the Punjab region of Pakistan. Protected from pollution and impurities since their formation 200 million years ago, pink Himalayan salt is believed to be the purest form of salt available. The high mineral crystals range in colour from sheer white, varying shades of pink, to deep reds leading to the result of high mineral and iron content.
If organic credentials are important to you, look for a Soil Association certified brand - either a COSMOS Organic logo or COSMOS Natural logo (where products contain lots of ingredients which cannot be organic, such as water, salt or clay, but might contain organic ingredients, too). Salt of the Earth's range has evolved into sprays, roll-ons, balms and more since it first launched the Classic Crystal – so it's no surprise that our first impressions were that this is a super no-frills product.
