About this deal

This unique bar and stem combo uses an incredibly simple idea to create our favorite defibrillator for bikes with dead handling. I know it’s personal preference I respect to geo and bike fit bit what’s everyone’s thoughts on an ideal length? I currently have a 60mm stem and quite fancy treating myself to a little bling in the flavor of a nice shiny CNC’d stem. We’ve covered stems that are available in lengths from 25mm up to 100mm. We concentrated mostly on shorter reach units as that’s the most common upgrade switch for more responsive, lighter feeling steering. We’ve covered both 31.8mm and 35mm handlebar diameter stems too. Are shorter MTB stems better? I’m a regular average sized person though so I fit most bikes in my preferred size without making dramatic changes. I know taller people are more likely to use longer stems for ergonomic purposes and short people might use shorter stems to fit their bikes better.

Best mountain bike stems 2023 – the best stems to sharpen up

Almost all mountain bike handlebars use either a 31.8mm or 35mm bar clamp. Ian Linton / Immediate Media The steering response with the Apex is very good and we found it feels solid on the bike. There’s a slight amount of torsional flex, especially when really wrenching on the bar, but on a stiff, carbon-framed e-MTB with carbon wheels, a little bit of flex is no bad thing as it improves ride feel. Direct-mount stems are used for aggressive riding, such as downhill mountain bike racing. Alex Evans / Our MediaThe way I see it is I’m used to XC so a shorter stem will still give a trail feel even if it’s longer than what’s normal. Basically the issue I have is I need to get the fit on my winter bike and CX bike as close as I can to the Retul fit I had done on the Merida or the pirformis sydrome rears its ugly (and painful) head again!

Mountain bike stems are typically around 50-80mm long, while road bike stems are longer, starting at around 80mm and extending to 120mm or longer as the frame size increases. Gravel bike stems typically sit somewhere between the two. MTB stems from the leading cycle brands including Race Face, Deda and Nukeproof help cyclists to enjoy a better ride and control the steering. This stem was designed from the ground up to be stiff, strong and pretty darn light too. The rounded box shape is some 25% stiffer than the competition and after extensive real world and machine testing, proven this to be the best combination of these three principles as well as one damn strong stem! It’s also noteworthy for offering a bit of rise (approximately 6°), which is a welcome and all-too-rare feature on sub-50mm long stems. Secondly, as with Renthal’s handlebars, there is a tiny but noticeable flex apparent when really loading up the front end. Which could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on your position. If you’re currently feeling like your 35mm standard front end is overly harsh, Renthal’s Apex stem could be the answer to your prayers. Stems are often designed to be flippable, so depending on the amount of rise, you can angle the stem down to achieve a lower, more aerodynamic position, or up to put the handlebar in a more upright position. As we’ve already touched upon, road bike stems typically range from 80mm to 120mm on most off-the-shelf bikes, with 100mm or 110mm common on size medium bikes.

Current rides: Cervelo ZFS-5, Forbidden Druid V2, Specialized Chisel, custom Nicolai enduro tandem, Landescape/Swallow custom gravel tandemReasons to buy: Super solid and resilient, flex free, and now comes in some great colours. Great value As a result, fine-tuning the stem can be one way to tweak the handling of your bike – but remember, your stem doesn’t exist in isolation and changing the stem length will also impact your position on the bike. If you are having to put a 90mm stem on your DC bike to fit well, you simply bought too small of a bike and trying to make up for it with an extra long stem is a fools game. Sell the frame and start over.
