About this deal

Wisteria sap stains horribly, leaving a rusty mark, so wear your oldest garden clothing and do watch your step on ladders. If you aren’t steady on your feet get someone else to prune your wisteria for you. La Riche has also formulated a fantastic range of Shampoo's and Conditioners to help you get the most of your colour. The Pre Colour Shampoo will balance your hairs PH before dying whilst removing excess oils to ensure the best results from the Hair Colour. Whilst the Colour Care Shampoo and Conditioner have been developed to be kind to your hair and will ensure your colour lasts! If you’d like to grow a wisteria in a large container Wisteria fructens ‘Amethyst Falls’ has a compact habit with dense clusters of lilac-blue flowers which makes it ideal. Pruning is one of the keys to growing beautiful wisteria. Do it wrong, and you’ll be disappointed. Do it right, and you’ll be treated to a stunning display. You might need to use a sharp knife to make a slice in the outer layer to release a piece that is about a half-inch wide and two inches long.

If possible, maintenance pruning should be done just above a healthy leaf bud, leaving a few inches of new growth. Dead branches should be cut off entirely at a node. After blooming is done and Wisteria is starting to look shaggy, it’s time for a trim. Summer pruning is about keeping the Wisteria looking neat and also about managing growth so that it doesn’t get out of control and less pruning is needed in the winter. If they resist, make some cuts with the secateurs. Make sure the graft union (the bumpy bit ) is above the ground. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and two to three times as wide and top up with compost. Place your root ball in the hole - the top of the pot should be level with the top of the soil when you’ve finished.Prune the long thin green shoots that appear after flowering in July / August. If more drastic control is needed prune larger branches in late winter. Once new growth has started emerging, you’ll know that roots have started growing underground. Wait until at least four new leaves have formed before removing the tent. You can combine your summer pruning (or your first summer pruning) with deadheading since they need to happen at about the same time. Deadheading means removing flowers after they’ve wilted. The purpose of deadheading is to stop the plant from growing seeds so that it focuses more on blooming. Deadheading also gets unsightly dead flowers off of your Wisteria, so you don’t have to look at them. It normally flowers after 3-5 years. Once established it can grow vigorously and needs controlling. If you don’t deadhead your Wisteria, it will produce seed pods, and you may choose to remove them while you’re pruning in winter. It’s your choice whether to get rid of the seed pods or leave them. Some people like the appearance, but you may want to get them out of the way before the spring bloom.

Other cultivars worth looking out for are the white-flowered W. sinensis ‘Jako', which has longer racemes and a very powerful scent, especially at dusk when its presence is quite ghostly, and the violet-mauve W. sinensis ‘Amethyst’, one of the most highly scented cultivars. Pruning Wisteria encourages more side shoots to form, and since this is where blooming happens, it can lead to more flowers. Thinning the Wisteria also lets in more sunlight and air, which is good for bud formation. If you’re wondering how to tell the difference between American and Asian varieties, then you’ll find the answer in how the vines grow. Asian varieties grow much faster than American types, and Asian varieties also produce fuzzy seed pods. However, if you like the natural look and you have lots of space for it to spread, then there’s no need to prune Wisteria. If managing the vine’s size and shape is not an issue for you, you can save yourself the effort. Wisteria is perfectly happy not being pruned at all.

Don’t miss a thing

Learning how to propagate wisteria vines is easy; however, doing so by way of seed is not a good idea. If choosing to propagate from seed, soak them overnight and plant. The seeds should sprout within a few weeks but keep in mind that blooming may not occur for 10 to 15 years, if ever.
