About this deal

When Chief Inspector Georges Gorski informs the man's young and attractive wife of his death, she asks him to find out where her husband had been that night. It's so refreshing these days to find an author who rises well out of the mainstream and moves his work into literary territory, and that is precisely why I'm so drawn to his work. As the narrative moves forward, the reader witnesses a solid sense of isolation between characters, and even between characters and their immediate environment. Hanging over Gorski’s attempt to answer these questions is always another – whether the suspicion of foul play is only a product of his desire. The first part is the plot about how the death of Bertrand Barthelme during a car crash affects the lives of the two main protagonists.

He used this method of retrospection with his novel His Bloody Project, short listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2016. A35 Axminster Road in both directions blocked, queueing traffic due to accident, two vehicles involved between Fern Lane (Offwell) and Hutgate Road ( Honiton ).The book is presented as a manuscript come to light years after the author's death, and translated by Burnet from the original French. Police are appealing for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the incident or witnessed the collision itself. The players are intimately drawn, their actions closely described, the mood of the town almost palpable and the setting thoroughly evoked, while the reader is left to reach their own conclusions on several key aspects of the story. The two adults - both in their 30s - were also taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. Thus: “In Saint-Louis, as in all provincial backwaters, the inhabitants are most comfortable with failure.

This device is crucial in getting the full impact of what follows, but I'll go no further than that since the journey is best taken without a roadmap. For me the place and people are what makes this book so special, but there's an excellent plot at the heart of it too. There are definite undertones of Simenon's Maigret in the writing, a debt Burnet acknowledges, and lots of references to the greats of French literature.Police sergeant Geraint Butler, of the traffic unit, said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who very sadly died. on Tuesday, May 24 of a 'single collision' involving a white Triumph motorcycle on the A35 Puddletown bypass near to Tolpuddle. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, are in attendance on the A35 near Axminster in east Devon.

Their independent, dual inquiries lead the reader down a twisted road marked by seedy back rooms, bar brawls, and--as we have come to expect from Burnet--copious amounts of wine. As Macrae Burnet is careful not to specify the genre of this final text, it may turn out to be a departure – a Brunet memoir or biography of Simenon, perhaps even a guidebook to Saint-Louis – that would, presumably, further compromise the reliability of The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau and The Accident on the A35. His wife has left him, he has an unhealthy liftesyle, and a well developed gut from the considerable amount of alcohol he consumes. Meanwhile, the victim’s son Raymond has found a scrap of paper with an address on it in his father’s desk. His Bloody Project was presented as a collection of documents unearthed by Burnet as he traced his family tree. These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. Gorski, led on by the dead man's wife, who does not believe that her husband's death was an accident, travels to a neighboring town to try and find answers about the actual cause of Barthelme's death.
