Empusa was a demonic female monster and belonged to the villainous cult circle of the goddess of the Underworld, Hekate. She was single-legged, she wore a bronze sandal (Hekate wore bronze sandals as well) and had donkey caps. During the night, she would leave the Underworld and ascend on the world of the living. Empusa could take all forms and appeared to women and children to cause terror. She could transform herself into a bitch, a cow, or a beautiful girl. She seduced travelers, drank their blood and ate their flesh. The only way for travelers to defend themselves was to slander her. The pacing of this story is excellent considering how MUCH happens in this book!! It is laid out in such a way that you are never left confused and asking questions, but you are also never overwhelmed by too many storylines developing at once. This book is amazing and became one of my favorites reads from 2022 (and I already put it in my favorite books shelf cause it has all the things I love and cherish in books 💕) The abductors demand a ransom for her friend's freedom and Loren knew knew in this blood-drenched city, it's only a matter of time before her friend meets a tragic death. Guilt-ridden and frightened, Loren is willing to do whatever it takes to free her friends even if it means she will seek the help of the leader of one of Angelthene's most ruthless Darkslaying circles— Darien Cassel.

The book is written in dual POV which provided depth to both of the characters and made them very multi-dimensional. The Sirens were poultry with a female head. They were living in the seas. Their power lay in their upper body appearance: they were beautiful, young women and had a charming voice when they sang. They used their singing to lure sailors who were passing by their island and slaughter them. The great hero Odysseus (Ulysses), clever as he was, sealed his sailors' ears with wax and bound himself to the mast of his ship, to enjoy himself the beautiful song of the Sirens, without getting in the temptation of following the seductive Sirens.

You light up my life, Loren Calla.” I loved how the hero and heroine definitely had attraction from the beginning, but there was no insta-lust or insta-love. Despite it being quite the slow burn, the entire novel still felt very romantic, it was a big part of the story and the internal conflict of the characters aside from the problems they were dealing with externally together. The chemistry between the MMC and FMC was lovely, and their growing affection was totally believable and realistic. There is some satisfying steam (explicit, not FTB), and I've been lead to believe there will be even more in the upcoming book(s).
