Not see him?" Her voice went up. "But of course I must see him! Darling, darling, you're so terribly unimaginative! You don't realise the importance of details. He'll want to know exactly how and when everything happened--" Me encantó Josefina, me hice su fan número 1 desde el momento en que la describen como condenadamente fea y morbosa (tengo debilidad por ese tipo de personajes, sean buenos o malos... mujajajajaja). The setting is evocative: a small town where everyone knows everyone else and where locals would close ranks against outsiders. They've added that, "While we are investigating the incident and considering our legal options, we will not be commenting on any element of the ongoing investigation that may potentially prejudice any enforcement action we may pursue.

Charles's father, "The Old Man", is the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, so Charles investigates from the inside along with assigned detective, Chief Inspector Taverner. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie, [ Murder in the Crooked House] is a strange brew—one with a taste that certain adventurous readers may be well pleased to savor.” — The Wall Street Journal Then one night a terrible thing happened in the crooked house, a nightmare of violence out of which Alison emerged the only witness and sole survivor and from which she has been running ever since."The crooked house is a creepy place set in a very tight knit rural location called Saltleigh where the locals mistrust incomers and seem to close ranks together. Christobel Kent has created a story that is positively swirling with menace and intrigue with a protagonist who simply doesn’t know who or what to believe, the clever slicing of the different character’s stories raising this tale well above the generic small town mystery. Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan. One of my very favorite things about Agatha Christie is that when she said anyone could be a murderer under the right circumstances, she *meant* it. One would think that when you read a mystery, you should suspect everyone, but for most authors it just isn't true--if you read a "cozy" author, you can bet it won't be one of the charming young lovers, or the trusty Watson-like friend, or dear old Granny, or the kindly priest, etc. With Dame Agatha, it could be any of those, or everybody, or nobody (oh yes! I can think of at least one example of a suicide disguised as murder). It could be the person with the perfect alibi or the one with no apparent motive (but there really is a motive). This is why I think of Dame Agatha as absolutely ruthless in her fiction, however genteel she was in life, and Crooked House is Exhibit A! She was particularly proud of this novel, and rightly so. When Esme Grace was thirteen years old something catastrophic happened to her family. She had to change her name, cut herself off from the past and start a new life as a new person.

She survived the unthinkable, surviving a horrific event, in her teens which would make the strongest of us crumble. When she went by a different name, when she was Esme, living in the crooked house in a remote rural location her family were cruelly and brutally slaughtered, whilst she cowered praying not to be dsicovered. But to say she esacped unscathed would be a lie. Witnessing such an awful events is bound to leave a mark. Little wonder as an adult she finds it difficult to make friends, to trust people and maintain a relationship. Her judgement can be flawed and whilst holding it together outwardly she can be a little flaky, and who can blame her. Asking an author to choose the favorite book he or she wrote is often like asking a grandparent to choose a favorite grandchild; it results in a meaningless response like “they are all special to me.” Agatha Christie, perhaps the best pure mystery writer of all time, might be forgiven had she made a similar statement. However, Christie never hesitated in naming her two favorite books, one of which was Crooked House (she says as much in the introduction to this edition), and, after reading the book, I can understand why. On their arrival in Saltleigh Alison realises she’ll have no choice but to confront her demons. Not only are her own memories of her time there vivid, but it seems the relatively-closed community remembers Esme and her tragic past as well. Charles interviews the various members of the family, finding motives for each of them. All get bequests from Aristide's estate, but resented the way he bullied and manipulated them. Lady Edith de Haviland was the sister of Aristide's late first wife; she moved in to care for her motherless nephews. She despised her brother-in-law. Edith stalks around the grounds, blasting moles in the lawn with a shotgun. South Staffordshire Council said the demolition of The Crooked House in Dudley was "not agreed or deemed necessary". It is a whodunit psychological thriller written mainly in the third person, mostly from the point of view of the main character, Alison/Esme Grace, the sole survivor of a family massacre 13 years earlier.

What results is a building that is rather dizzying to look at but comes complete with a fascinating history. Don’t let the gravity defying appearance fool you, this store is a popular tourist attraction with visitors travelling far and wide to take a peek inside. The fire at the pub, once branded Britain's "wonkiest", took place on Saturday 5 August 2023 and then the building was demolished just two days later, which South Staffordshire Council said was done without permission. The characters are all well drawn, all flawed with secrets of their own to hide. None are particularly likeable with a few certain exceptions. Alison herself is realistically portrayed as a flawed and damaged character, distrustful of all, secretive and lonely. The portrayal of her as a teenager shows a different and alternate side to her, what she could have been perhaps, and still anything but perfect. The action takes place in and near London in the autumn of 1947. Christie said this and Ordeal by Innocence were her favorites among her own works. The Crooked House sits on a snowbound cliff overlooking icy seas at the remote northern tip of Japan. A curious place for the millionaire Kozaburo Hamamoto to build a house, but even more curious is the house itself – a disorienting maze of sloping floors and strangely situated staircases, full of bloodcurdling masks and uncanny, lifesize dolls. When a man is found dead in one of the mansion’s rooms, murdered in seemingly impossible circumstances, the police are called. But they are unable to solve the puzzle, and powerless to protect the party of house guests as more bizarre deaths follow. Oddly enough, I know from her notebooks that Dame Agatha didn't have a specific murderer in mind when she began this novel. She had the premise of the extended family in their mansion, whose patriarch has died, but she debated among several suspects. I must say, if she'd chosen anyone else I would be giving this fewer stars--I felt it almost as a physical blow when she revealed the truth, then immediately thought that no other ending would have done half so well.

Aristide Leonides, the man who was murdered; born in Smyrna, Turkey, he arrived in London in 1884 when he was 24 This book starts out as a heart thumper drawing the reader into the fray as Kent describes the night when Esme Grace narrowly escapes with her life as she runs and hides in the marsh just beyond the crooked house that was her home. In that crooked house she has left behind the remains of her family - her mother, brother, younger twin sisters - and the only other survivor, her father and suspected killer. The Old Man", Sir Arthur Hayward, Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, father of Charles Hayward Charles Hayward loves Sophia Leonides and only one tiny thing is keeping them from announcing their engagement.
