About this deal

Dirty Hippie is a series of erotically-charged artworks created by the pop musician and sculptor, Miley Cyrus, and explores sexuality and eroticism through unique combinations of unconventional yet sexually suggestive materials. Cyrus’ unique sculptures reflect the artist’s inner world and public persona as defined by terms such as “sex-loving party girl”, which promotes a sex-positive approach to sculpture through various multi-media assemblages. Some of the materials found in Cyrus’ colorful and provocative sculptures include marijuana joints, vibrators, party favors, and pineapples, which reflect her experience of living life to the fullest. By today’s standards, several of the boys on this cup are underage, yet the Romans accepted partnerships between older and younger males.

Nauman’s art is predicated on the notion that an artwork does not always need to be an object, but may be an action or activity, performed either by the artist or by the audience. In this, his work relates to and furthers that of the influential French artist Marcel Duchamp who questioned the meaning of art and introduced the notion of the “readymade”: an artwork created from a pre-existing object, such

The 1960s and 1970s saw a significant social and political transformation in Europe and America. The battle for women’s equality, with an emphasis on sensuality, woman’s choice, the household, and the workplace, was among the movements. Painters and scholars began to look into how imagery in Western art and media were frequently constructed within a male storyline, and how this maintained idealizations of the female figure. The questioning and examination of the dominant male perspective within the art history narrative, reflected in both critique and creative practice, came to characterize much of the art and erotic artists of the 20th century. Sala of Cupid and Psyche, Tea Palace, Mantua, with a painting of Zeus seducing Olympias by Giulio Romano; Sailko, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons The Three Graces portrays three ladies standing together, their nude bodies interlaced, and their limbs delicately draped. While the sculpture is not overtly sexual in nature, the representation of the women’s bare bodies is perceived as sensuous. The naked human body is regarded as seductive or sexually charged in many cultures, and the Three Graces are no exception. The representation of the women’s bodies in the sculpture, with their delicate curves and silky skin, is intended to be visually pleasing and to elicit sentiments of yearning and sensuality. They are tied together by their clasped hands and a scarf that affords some modesty. Fuseli, who was drawn to topics ranging from the occult to Shakespeare’s works, sealed his fame with a picture of a prostrate lady accompanied by a wild-eyed horse and a monstrous tiny creature known as an incubus.

Ancient Egypt had the 8.5-foot-long Turin Erotic Papyrus, a scroll painting with 12 vignettes depicting a variety of sex positions that dates to around 1150 B.C.E. And the Moche civilization of Peru created pottery of people engaged in anal sex as early as 100 C.E. was devised by the Italian engraver Marcantonio Raimondi, who based his designs on sixteen images of sexual positions reputedly drawn by Giulio Romano, court artist to the duchy of Mantua. Romano also designed and decorated a new pleasure palace, Palazzo Te, filled with a number of erotic frescos, for his patron Federico II Gonzaga on the outskirts of the city. He is also believed to have painted for the same ruler the enigmatic Many of the sculptures at the park were created by graduate artists from Hongik University in 2002. Sculpted by the master of Baroque sculpture, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in the 17 th century, Ecstasy of St. Theresa is a popular erotic sculpture that is more subtle in its suggestion of sexual pleasure. The sculpture portrays a scene from the life of Teresa when she encounters the divine, defined by an intense experience or reaction to the essence of divinity, and is seen as an expression of religious ecstasy. The sculpture was created in the Counter-Reformation style and was aimed at communicating the spiritual aspects of Catholicism. Asking important questions such as “who makes erotic art?” and “what makes erotic art problematic to society? “ are excellent first steps in navigating the complexities of eroticism in art history. Other important erotic sculptures to study include works such as Dona i Ocell (1983) by Joan Miro, the mysterious Marree Man (c. 1998) earth sculpture, Pi-Chacán (2001) by Fernando de la Jara, and Dirty Corner (2011) by Anish Kapoor that move beyond the nuanced theme of eroticism. When The Nightmare (1781) was displayed in 1782 at the Royal Academy of Arts, it received both critical praise and condemnation; while this did not lessen the artwork’s appeal, the idea that the young lady was in the throes of a sexual dream was scandalous.

The discovery of artworks that reveal messages of personal sexual expression or spiritual and superstitious purposes has transformed the way we think about sexuality, the body, and the importance of sexual expression in the arts. Sexual statues of prehistory such as the Venus figurines of the Upper Paleolithic era highlight the value that civilizations of the past placed on the human form and heterosexual female body as a vessel for protection and a symbol for fertility.
