About this deal

At weddings, the Godox AD200’s are my main flashes for pretty much everything. Outdoors for groups. Portraits. Indoors, I use them to light speeches, first dances and occasionally if the situation demands, wedding ceremonies.

The bare bulb flash head works well inside a softbox or umbrella, as the bare bulb spreads the light around evenly. One of the most disruptive things about flash is, unsurprisingly, the flash. When you are working alongside cinema teams it can be a nuisance constantly seeing the strobing light in the footage. Above all, it does affect how hyperaware the subject is of being photographed that it reads in shots. For moments when there is action and both photo and video need to capture it, I prefer using a video light so we can work together to make sure we get the shots we need rather than recreating the moment (one with flash and one without). The modeling light on the AD100 Pro helped immensely for this and photograph static objects like invites, rings, and jewelry with the video team I was shooting this wedding with. Three years after their release, there are imitators but no-one close to competing with this innovative flash. The Godox AD200's really are the perfect mix of flexibility, portability as well as being great value for money. The One System allows you to communicate with our PIXAPRO flashes built-in receivers and control them all from one trigger. The 2.4GHz system will give you full functionality, compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus & Pentax To get into the custom menu, long press the C.Fn button which is also the test fire button. One of the first things I recommend you do if like me you will be using this for weddings is switch off the beep. This is F01 and it should be set to OFF. The long-life lithium battery has enough charge for 500 full-power flashes, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power mid-shoot. The main addition is colour stability mode which keeps the colour temperature within 100 Kelvin. This is not really an issue wedding photographers will care about but if you are a studio/commercial photographer then this could be a feature you want to pay for.

The round head provides a gentler light spread compared to the classic Fresnel. For those who prefer fixed lighting from AD200 units, LED heads are an option — albeit with only 60 LEDs putting out 3.6W of power that isn’t overly powerful. For portraits, my favourite combination is to modify the fresnel flash head with the Maggrid and magsphere. I do realise this will not give me the kind of soft light a large softbox would. But as I have said before, weddings are often a compromise between speed and portability. Now that I’ve helped paint a picture of just how tiny this flash is, let’s discuss how it actually performs. Frankly, it almost felt too good to be true, that you could get a petite modeling light + mini strobe in one and have it be the light that solves your problems. I’m here to tell you that gear can’t always solve your issues but in this particular scenario, the Godox AD100 Pro exclusively provides solutions. Therefore, I decided to list the problems I have come across with other products and explain how this one flash seems to solve them. Problem: Having Too Much Power with the AD200s The issue with artificial light is that too much of it makes it look fake. If your goal is to recreate sunlight or mimic the natural light direction there are so many products available to help you do that. But the Godox AD100 Pro offers something a bit different than blasting your flash through an umbrella or softbox to create/mimic window light. Moreover, the modeling light allows you to match the ambient light in the room and create more believable lighting setups. It’s almost as if you are enhancing the light patterns you notice rather than creating a new version of the scene.Using an optional wireless transmitter, the built-in wireless system is the most common method to fire the flash. You can wirelessly control TTL functions 8: Consistent Color Throughout the Entire Power Range

Misfires: I have had some issues with misfires, but nothing that would impact the timing of my shot or risk the potential of my images. The highest misfire rate I experienced was using HSS in broad daylight. I will dive into more of the beneficial uses of this light for wedding photographers a little later on but I wanted to highlight this feature from the spec list. In my past Godox V1 review and Godox AD200 review, the biggest flaws or downsides of those products were the modeling lights. They seemed like afterthoughts, while this seemed intentional. They weren’t very color accurate, didn’t have the right amount of power output, and overall could have been made without the feature entirely.

Product Specification

The AD series is not to be confused with a traditional speedlite unit that can be mounted on a camera hotshoe. It has no hotshoe connection, so must be controlled either via sync cable (3.5mm or USB wireless control port) or (better option) Godox’s 2.4ghz Wireless-X system. This comes either through a master flash unit (like the V1 unit I recently reviewed) or via a wireless flash trigger (I use the X-Pro). The Multi flash, or Stroboscopic, mode. Multi flash is a continuous flash function, firing the flash multiple times during one exposure. This generally goes with a slow shutter speed. 13: Additional Flash Heads Battery Life: say goodbye to those 16-bay AA battery chargers! Not only do AD200’s run on Lithium-Ion batteries, but the charge lasts for HOURS. I have shot 3-day Indian weddings and haven’t had to worry about charging my batteries overnight. The reason I regularly choose the AD200Pro is due to the option to change my flash head depending on the situation. Looking for tutorials utilizing the AD200 in action? We’ve rounded up our favorite articles and lighting courses that feature this light.

The Godox AD200 Pro supports flash exposure compensation in 1/3 stop increments. If you’re using TTL mode, flash exposure compensation allows you to increase or decrease the light output to get the correct flash exposure. 12: Multiple Flash Mode Options

The on/off switch at the side has been changed. The original AD200 switch was not easy to find if you don't know what you are looking for. I've had assistants who have never used the AD200 be unable to find it. The Pro switch feels a bit better and more obvious. It's a small improvement but hardly groundbreaking.
