B.R Yeager illustrates this through the protagonists’ relationship to their parents who aren’t really characters of this novel in the conventional sense of the term. Occult magick and a mysterious drug create a portal into an atmospheric, catastrophic voyage between realms. Negative Space" is built around three woven narratives that ultimately tie back into the character arc of their peer and friend Tyler, who acts as the crux these narratives rely on. It has become the talk of the town since, but I believe this conceptual horror novel is not done colonizing our collective consciousness.And she carried on: “My body was so full of adrenaline that, instead of screaming or fighting, I went still, and I went to work, with words. There’s a lot of personality established even in minor narrative strokes; for example despite the ambiguity surrounding what’s really happening in Kennedy’s life what we do see communicates so much about her and a tragic reality that’s central to another story and Jill brushing it off because of her own fixation on Tyler makes it hit even harder; or Arnie’s slow descent from a sort of Christ figure for Lu that eventually deteriorates because of the natural consequences of drug use and communication with forces beyond our control and comprehension, showing that he’s just a human after all; or even Marlon, who despite not having much of an arc is still necessary for being a decent dude balancing out the darkness and animosity of his friends, making his death and its brutality even more poignant.

It's easy to become desensitised to tragic news stories, but this video for the World Food Programme drives home the plight of refugees in a very powerful way. Like Jill, Ahmir, and Lu, we are never given an objective account of why the events in the book are happening and their meaning and relation to one another is left uncertain.When you’re learning how to add values to create form, the idea of intentionally leaving areas blank and untouched may seem troublesome. In fact, everything that happens in Kinsfield is so egregiously violent that people just inexplicably live with it. When Tim Leary declared in the '60s that the young should tune in, turn on, and drop out, or whatever jibberish he was selling to the boomers, he was preaching to a mostly middle class audience of suburban rebels and black sheep. It reflects the reality of a future that, while not devoid of the possibility of change, seems relentlessly despairing, and it does not shy away from portraying this in all its ugliness and uncertainty. Focused on a group of high school friends (kinda-sorta "friends" for the most part), it deals heavily with topics like depression, self-mutilation, suicidal ideation, drug abuse, abusive relationships, and self-destruction.

They each last a couple of pages before seemingly disappearing from the collective consciousness of Kinsfield. It's been this way for a long, long time, but many people never notice until it's pointed out, making this a nice little design secret that you can't unsee once you know it's there. Longer lines of type need more space between them, and almost any book design can be made more readable by increasing the leading.This novel will make your feel ugly and vulnerable in the best possible way, like someone stared into your soul and looked at every little imperfection. In general I don’t think I’ve like…ever read a horror novel that’s as burned into the fabric of my brain as this one tbh?

It really feels like you could read the first 3 chapters and the last 3 and you would still be left with the same amount of questions you had then if you read the entire novel. Another aspect of Negative Space that makes it stand out in my opinion is its almost kinetic understanding of what it feels like to grow up and live important years of your life in a fucked up place. Rather than use an actual Air Max, it employs a trainer-shaped piece of negative space to suggest air. Elements of an image that distract from the intended subject, or in the case of photography, objects in the same focal plane, are not considered negative space. Tyler binds these people together, but none of them really like each other, and each become propped up by their various dependencies.There's that ridiculous occult/New Age/Wiccan phrase, "As above, so below," and I think on some level that's the easiest way to describe the worldview of Negative Space without delving into particulars. One last tidbit on the materialist/social commentary fractal of this novel is Yeager's portrayal of the Kinsfield High school shooting. Set in Kinsfeild, a small town plagued by suicide, a group of nihilistic teenagers are trying to cope with the aberration of the world by entering a realm where the mortal flesh and human era's meaning are a blur.
