About this deal

Made at the highly revered Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados, Doorly’s XO is a blend of column and pot still rums, aged for a minimum of six years and finished in oloroso Sherry casks. This rum is bursting with notes of toffee, tarte tatin and vanilla, with a warming, dark sugar note that makes it not too sweet but deliciously moreish. Great as a sipping rum. More info JM continues to innovate and regularly offers limited editions or collaborations with other producers to provide unique flavor experiences. One of the most notable examples is the series of aged rums that have undergone finishing in Calvados casks, creating unexpected encounters between Norman and Antillean terroirs. Choosing the Right Rhum J.M for You X.O” is a standard naming convention for the most prestigious, well-aged rum release in the core lineup of many Caribbean rum/rhum distilleries regardless of region, and on Martinique it implies at least 6 years in the wood. As such, Rhum J.M X.O is labeled as “aged 6 years in oak barrels in our cellars,” but is generally accepted to contain rhums far older than that as well. Notably, this one is aged exclusively in “re-charred bourbon barrels,” seeing no new oak, which makes sense given that it is given longer to mature. It’s considerably darker in the glass, at a glance. Rhum JM must surely have the rare distinction of being the only distillery located in the shadow of an active volcano, Mount Pelee. Rhum JM oldest distillery still producing on Martinique, and an iconic brand of the Rhum Agricole style. Drinkers should expect rich nutty notes of butter and toffee, with a slight citrus aroma and a chewy mouthfeel.

As for the size, the label is large… and normally I’d complain about that, since such a huge label would prevent you from seeing the spirit inside the bottle. But the dark green glass used here already means there really isn’t much to see. I’m still getting that dark and rich component from the oak, but it isn’t quite as loud as before. Instead, the fruit flavors get more of the spotlight, with the pineapple and banana specifically coming through strong. To be fair, it doesn’t have quite the same level of flavor saturation as before — it’s a little more towards the watery end of the spectrum at this point. Fizz (Dark and Stormy) Once cultivated and crushed into a juice, the sugar is added to some water and fermented for no more than five days to an alcohol content of 7.5% ABV. (The idea here is that the lower-than-usual alcohol content will allow more flavorful rum to be produced in the end.) The result is that not much really changes in this case in terms of the profile — the only thing that does change is that it’s a little less intense of a flavor profile thanks to the added dilution. It’s still fruity and light, with possibly even a touch more of the pineapple on the finish than before. Fizz (Dark and Stormy) The history of Rhum Agricole is closely tied to the economic shifts in the Caribbean sugar industry. In the late 19th century, as European beet sugar began to dominate the market, cane sugar prices plummeted, leaving Caribbean sugar producers in a bind. Distillers on the French islands turned to distilling rum directly from sugarcane juice as a way to pivot from the declining sugar market, thereby birthing Rhum Agricole.

This year’s festival was such a great event, it was an event dedicated to people who wanted to learn about rum, taste rum and cultivate themselves in the world of rum,” Lulaj said. “It was also a moment to have fun and spend a nice evening in the company of a local band with local music a nice Ti Punch in hand.” To make the right choice among the extensive selection of JM rums, several criteria should be considered: Grands crus, older vintages, large formats, Champagne, whiskies, cognacs, armagnacs, rare wines, or simply a good bottle More info Located in northern Martinique at the foot of Mount Pelée, Habitation Bellevue benefits from a tropical climate and particularly rich and fertile volcanic soil excellent for the cultivation of exceptional sugarcane. Our sugarcane grow up the face of the volcano on the exposed to the tropical sea breezes, which are important to ventilate the sugarcane. The biggest addition to this year’s event was the Rum Festival on the Harbor, an initiative spearheaded by Erjon Lulaj. You may know this brand better for its bitters, but the Angostura Distillery in Trinidad & Tobago’s Port of Spain also makes some fantastic rums. This particular expression marries light, medium and heavy rums, which have each been aged for a minimum of seven years, in ex-bourbon barrels. The result is golden syrup with cocoa and vanilla. A good dessert rum. Alc 40% As mentioned earlier, they bottle this release at barrel proof. While that’s an generally a interesting thing to experience, I feel like taking this neat might not be the ideal preparation because of that. There’s an almost immediate significant alcohol burn on the palate that can be a bit unpleasant, but with repeated trips to the glass it does calm down. Made on the banks of Guyana’s Demerera River, using both wooden and metal Coffey stills, this hugely popular 12 Year Old is full of rich and fruity esters. Toffee, vanilla and spices combine with dried dark fruits, especially prunes, and even a whisper of smoke, making this a beautiful rum to enjoy just as it is. Alc 40% In fact, the volcano is probably responsible for some of JM’s typical style. The volcanic soil on which the the distillery’s estate is built is incredibly fertile, making it perfect for the growing of sugar cane. Indeed, the distillery grows all the sugar cane it uses in the Habitation Bellevue estate, found a little further up mountain. Habitation Bellevue is the perfect location for growing cane, not just because of the soil, but also because of the warm climate, humid sea air and altitude. Despite this, volcano life has its downsides: prospective disasters aside, the added altitude means that whilst there is a greater yield of cane crop, the sugar content is lower, meaning that more crop has to be used when making the rum.
