About this deal

And I love that the bad guys are always in sight and they change (add or really change I cannot say at this point). Kaden, relying on the assistance of two unlikely acquaintances, makes his way towards the Annurian Capital to potentially claim the Unhewn Throne. Brian Staveley's The Providence of Fire, the second novel in the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series. It'd be bad enough if one of them did. But all three of them did. And continued to do it. They didn't learn from their mistakes. They didn't really seem to grow as characters. They just kept being idiots. And selfish. It got pretty frustrating. The sooner we talk about The Emperor’s Blades’ foremost failings, the sooner we can dig into the better bits of it, so I’m going to come right out as say that Staveley doesn’t do nearly enough with the women of his first fiction, and that which he does do is poor, to be sure. Though a suggestive synopsis of her part of the plot occupies one third of the blurb, and in retrospect she seems central to the overall arc of the otherwise ambitious narrative this book begins, Adare hardly features in the novel at all. In the five of its fifty chapters she is in—the others are divided down the middle between the brothers—all she does is push the plot along and— sigh—have some hanky-panky.

I just can't, just when I thought things has gotten bettet it got worse than before for the siblings. Like Kaden, Valyn is approaching the end of his training, yet he wrestles regularly with the wrongness of what he’s been taught. Before he has the chance to put the Kettral code into practice, however, he’ll have to survive a increasingly suspicious series of accidents and a final test that could end in his death.Takes a story of family, loss, conspiracy and revenge and gives it new legs. It’s epic fantasy with a sharp, jagged edge to it, a modern sensibility, prose as tight as the leather wrapped about a sword’s hilt, and characters that you can relate to and give a damn about. I look forward to the next installment of Staveley’s chronicle.” —R. S. Belcher, author of The Six-Gun Tarot I am still a bit confused about the end - well not confused I just need to connect all the dots really. This is a real problem with the novel, obviously. There will be those who hate The Emperor’s Blades because of its manifest mistreatment of women, and at points I approached a similar position. But to review a book in full you’ve got to be able to take the long view, and when I finally forged on, I found plenty to recommend Staveley’s debut. Finished Blades last night – now I can give my poor family some attention, I’ve seriously neglected them of late.. Till the next one. Kaden hui’Malkeenian, the Scion of Light, the Long Mind of the World, Holder of the Scales, and Keeper of the Gates. Heir to the Unhewn Throne.

I didn't love Adare, her narrative, or her character arc this book. There also seemed to be a carelessness with the lives and fates of the characters we're following that sort of bothered me. Deaths, arguments for the sake of arguments, plot threads dropped or forgotten. Staveley lives in Vermont, and is married. He taught literature, philosophy, history, and religion before beginning to write fiction. [1] Work [ edit ] The Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne [ edit ] Anyway, I'm rambling. I loved the worldbuilding. I really enjoyed most of the characters, but mostly Kaden. His character arc stole the show here. I think we've set up great antagonists for the next book and maybe (hopefully) a couple of redemption arcs?! We'll see!I think Valyn disappeared for too long – from beeing freed from longfist till the end of the book. His transformation from inside seeking revenge and generating aggression, hatred and bloodlust simply … never showed up. Thats a pitty. I’ve almost finished your awesome book! I love the way you’ve built your world but still maintained high quality characters. The best book I’ve read since The Name of the Wind.
