About this deal

Chocolate Mouse for Greedy Goose’ is a fantastic rhyming story about a bunch of animals that cook a meal for each other and have lots of shenanigans along the way. The book is essentially about table manners and Julia Donaldson uses rhyme and lots of adjectives in the story to get children to describe ways of eating and cooking food. A world-to-text connection can be made using this book. This is that the reader will most likely have carried out many of the things that the animals are doing in their day-to-day life (eating and helping with the washing up). My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes.

I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. Confectionery- To complement children hearing the Roald Dahl story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Chocolate Shaped Poetry resource is perfect for their poetry inspired by Willy Wonka’s factory. Fruit: This story would be perfect for EYFS children, as you could read it to them to generate a discussion about food that they eat at home. This could then progress onto a Literacy activity where children could write a menu for a restaurant. This could then lead onto a UW activity where children could discuss food and where in the world the food comes from. This then could lead to a taster session where children get to try lots of food form around the world. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. Fruit- Use the Where Does Chocolate Come From? PowerPoint to explore the topic of chocolate with your children, including some activity ideas to stimulate discussion and active learning. Using this, get the children to make their own booklet explaining what they have learnt. The Mini Book Template is ideal for the children to record their findings in and even has room for their illustrations!Fair Trade- Children will learn all about the journey from cocoa bean to chocolate bar through the World Fairtrade Day Chocolate Information PowerPoint. A great way to introduce the concept of fair trade to your class, with plenty of opportunities for discussion, activity and role-play. Having previously read 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson, I decided to try and locate another one of her books and across this one. This book would be brilliant for a teacher to read to children between the age of 4- 5. It can be a fairly interactive book as well as amusing. Pictures can be shown to the class whilst reading so they can attempt to link words to pictures as well as try sound out some words phonetically. This would be a good book to read alone for a child of age 5, as because the words are fairly simple, they can make use of their phonics knowledge. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading.

I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs. I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books. Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers. I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him).
