About this deal

Taken altogether, the enhanced features create a potent, everyday zoom lens befitting the very latest generation of mirrorless cameras, a lens that draws you a giant step closer to maximizing your enjoyment of photography. The other brand new feature is the USB-C Connector Port, which allows you to update and customise the lens directly using the TAMRON Lens Utility software, rather than via a camera body. A non-camera body manufacturer brand, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Minolta, Nikon and Pentax mounts. Lens sharpness has nothing to do with picture sharpness; every lens made in the past 100 years is more than sharp enough to make super-sharp pictures if you know what you're doing. The only limitation to picture sharpness is your skill as a photographer. It's the least talented who spend the most time worrying about lens sharpness and blame crummy pictures on their equipment rather than themselves. Skilled photographers make great images with whatever camera is in their hands; I've made some of my best images of all time with an irreparably broken camera! Most pixels are thrown away before you see them, but camera makers don't want you to know that. This lens uses the very latest VXD linear motor focus mechanism for fast, quiet and precise auto-focusing, and full-time manual focus override is also possible.

Dog Whirligig, Pacific Beach, California, 4:21 PM, Friday, 10 June 2022. Nikon Z9, Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 at 39mm at f/5.6 at 1/ 500 at Auto ISO 64 ( LV14.6), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full resolution 45MP file (10MB). Image stabilization: All lenses in this comparison rely on the sensor-based image stabilization of the respective mirrorless cameras – except for the Canon which has optical image stabilization built in. [0] In use, we found the new focusing system to be very quiet and also very fast with the lens mounted on a Sony A7 IV camera, indeed just as snappy as the best Sony standard zooms such as the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens. When comparing the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 to the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 there is a rather noticeable size and weight difference. We are talking 10cm in diameter, 20cm in length and a whopping 330g in weight between the two.

Spectacular optical performance for inspiring creativity

Lens firmware updates are not supported with the Mobile version. Performing firmware updates requires the TAMRON Lens Utility for PC and a computer. Since I am most often using Canon lenses, I personally find the reverse-direction-rotating zoom ring to be awkward. Holy cow, I never would have thought to look through Tamron's boneyard (I'm an artist who has to produce exciting images, not a camera researcher), but yes, everything about these two lenses appears to be the same, even down to the weights and the MTF curves.

To connect your smartphone and lens, use the TAMRON Connection Cable (USB Type-C to Type-C/ Model CC-350) sold separately. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. The A036 zoom delivers a dazzling balance of clear yet soft rendering, stunning bokeh and exceptional resolution for in-focus areas. It also captures the finer details across the entire focus plane with performance that supports the latest high-resolution cameras—all while expressing the characteristic smoothness of a fast aperture lens. Crop from above image at f/2.8. If this is 6" wide on your screen, the complete image printed at this same magnification would be 40 x 60." (1 x 1.5 meters.) Pursue a wide range of photography with a lineup of lenses that all have the same 67mm filter diameter

Summary

My sample was much softer on the right side than the left, a sign of relaxed manufacturing tolerances. Autofocus is via a motor in the lens. As the lens focuses, the focus ring turns. It is not silent; the little motor sounds like a kid's toy.

Additionally, TAMRON has adopted a new design with improved ergonomics and revised the coating of the lens exterior to improve scratch resistance. The filter size is 67mm, which is standard among TAMRON’s fast-aperture zoom lens series and enables the sharing of lens caps, filters, and other accessories. The 2nd-generation Model A063 is compatible with the new ‘TAMRON Lens Utility’ software (for PC/ for devices with Android™ [2] OS) originally and uniquely developed by TAMRON[3]. Users can customize the lens functions and update the firmware[4] through the lens. In addition, by using the Mobile version, Focus Preset and A-B Focus can be operated remotely without touching the lens. The personal customization gives flexible shooting options to match the still photography or videography shooting situation. The Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 is pretty blurry on the sides at f/2.8, so you'll probably see plenty of coma.At 75mm, central sharpness is excellent from f/2.8 to f/8, very good at f/11 and f/16 and good at f/22. The edges are good from f/2.8 to f/5.6, very good at f/8, good at f/11 and f/16 and drop off to just fair at f/22.

Light fall-off is very well controlled with exception of strong full frame corner darkening with a wide open aperture - If you’re out and about shopping and you decide to compare a cheaper third-party product to a professional high end native variation, you’d probably expect it to be a chalk and cheese type of comparison. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a mammoth 55×82½″ (1.4×2.1 meters) at this same extremely high magnification! I will admit that the Sony may out perform it in different ways but I cannot imagine it to be “twice the price” worth of difference.

Personally I find that the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 has an optimum level of sharpness between f/4 and f/5.6, but I still tend to use it mostly at f/2.8-f/3.5 for some reason that I cannot explain. At 35mm, central sharpness is excellent from f/2.8 to f/4, outstanding at f/5.6, very good from f/8 to f/16 and good at f/22. The edges are very good at f/2.8, excellent at f/4 and f/5.6, very good from f/8 to f/16 and again dropping off to just fair at f/22. CA (Chromatic Aberration) is well controlled with only slight CA visible at the wide end in harsh situations.
