About this deal

There’s a rich and heavy fruit aroma coming off the glass here, almost like a very sweet fruitcake — I’m getting some raisins, apricots, deep brown sugar, plums, figs, and a touch of vanilla for good measure. As the liquid settles, there’s a bit of the herbaceous raw sugar cane that peeks through, but it is significantly buried under everything else. It’s less of a tropical assortment than we saw in the VSOP and more of the traditional rancio profile.

It was a rematch of 2021, when the same two rum houses faced off for the title, and again Neisson came out on top, another win for Neisson, arguably the most sought-after boutique rum distillery on earth. On the equally lush and verdant but arrestingly French territory of Martinique, Habitation Clément epitomises the character of agricole rhum, which is made using sugarcane juice. The distillery is doing some interesting experiments with cask finishes, which are more common in whisky ageing than rum ageing). They’re using the likes of Pedro Ximénez, Sauternes and even Scotch whisky.

Your Personal Taste: depending on whether you prefer the fresh and herbal flavors of white rums, the indulgent aromas of amber rums, or the intensity of aged rums, explore the range that best suits your preferences. Martinique has taken the lead in establishing stringent production standards, achieving an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) designation for Martinique Rhum Agricole in 1996. This AOC, much like those for French wines, specifies the types of sugarcane that can be used, the areas of production, the distillation process, and the ageing requirements, ensuring each bottle meets high quality and authenticity standards. Following fermentation, the sugarcane wine is distilled, typically in a column still, a method preferred for its ability to produce a clear, high-proof spirit while preserving the aromatic subtleties derived from the sugarcane. The result is a potent distillate that is then either bottled as a white Rhum Agricole or aged in oak barrels to produce vieux (old) Rhum Agricole. Your Budget: JM rums are available at different price points, from more affordable versions for a gentle introduction to limited and numbered editions for collectors and discerning enthusiasts.

Davis said this year’s support from the St Barthelemy Collectivite had proven invaluable, helping to place the event as a prominent part of the annual St Barth calendar. The Damoiseau VIP party at Les Ilets de la Plage. Made at the highly revered Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados, Doorly’s XO is a blend of column and pot still rums, aged for a minimum of six years and finished in oloroso Sherry casks. This rum is bursting with notes of toffee, tarte tatin and vanilla, with a warming, dark sugar note that makes it not too sweet but deliciously moreish. Great as a sipping rum. Alc 40% On the nose, it’s redolent in pineapple and fresh fruit, registering as quite sweet, but with lots of greener notes (green plantains, fresh grass) as well. On the palate, it bursts with fresh citrus and pineapple juice, in a way that I can only describe as “tangy,” but then segues into intense earthiness and grassy flavors, alternating between mushroom-like earthiness and green notes. My immediate thought is that I need to get this into a daiquiri soon, just to see how intense (and probably delicious) that will be. The citrus qualities in particular seem to make this a no-brainer for simple preparations like the daiquiri or Ti’ punch. Im Abgang bleiben Karamell und Vanille sehr lange, Früchte und Holz bleiben auch für länger. Du musst auf die Insel ! As mentioned earlier, they bottle this release at barrel proof. While that’s an generally a interesting thing to experience, I feel like taking this neat might not be the ideal preparation because of that. There’s an almost immediate significant alcohol burn on the palate that can be a bit unpleasant, but with repeated trips to the glass it does calm down.As for the size, the label is large… and normally I’d complain about that, since such a huge label would prevent you from seeing the spirit inside the bottle. But the dark green glass used here already means there really isn’t much to see. Fumée Volcanique: an amber rum with mineral and slightly smoky notes, ideal for adding character to your creations.

Créoles: an amber rum rich in spices and warm notes, offering an exotic and spicy touch to your drinks. An excellent homage to the spiced rum tradition of St Lucia, this expression of Chairman’s Reserve is a blend of Coffey and pot still rums aged in ex-bourbon casks and infused with local fruits and spices, such as orange peel, cinnamon and nutmeg. We’re talking Jaffa Cakes with Chairman’s’ recognisable dark chocolate note coming through, as well as Christmas cake, while all those spices give a beautiful warming finish. Alc 40% For all mixology enthusiasts, JM has created the L'Atelier des Rhums range, which brings together rums specially designed to express specific aromatic profiles: Contemporary Rhum Agricole producers are experimenting with new ageing techniques, including using different wood types for barrels or varying the ageing climate conditions to create unique expressions. However, producers also face challenges such as climate change impacting sugarcane crops, necessitating a focus on sustainable agriculture and production practices. Price estimate statistics ---- J.M 2005 Of. Calvados Cask n°0410149 - One of 580 - bottled 2015 ---- The history of Rhum Agricole is closely tied to the economic shifts in the Caribbean sugar industry. In the late 19th century, as European beet sugar began to dominate the market, cane sugar prices plummeted, leaving Caribbean sugar producers in a bind. Distillers on the French islands turned to distilling rum directly from sugarcane juice as a way to pivot from the declining sugar market, thereby birthing Rhum Agricole. It began with a rooftop, oceanfront tasting of ultra-rare Martinique rum at St Barth’s magnificent Le Barthelemy Hotel and Spa. While the plantation remains owned by the family of Crassous de Médeuil, the trademark for Rhum J.M. was sold in 2002 to Group Bernard Hayot, a Martinique-based trade group who markets and sells the brand of rum worldwide. Product Now off my art critic soapbox. Let's look at the rum itself. It is a deep amber color with a hint of bronze. It has nice legs and beads of the rum cling to the sides after settling from a swirl in my snifter. It has a recognizable agricole aroma but nothing harsh.
