About this deal

From the time she arrives on the floor, she just can’t shake the bad feeling that continues to overcome her. I don’t recommend this book because it is unable to offer you the courtesy of a decent representation on a certain important matter. As long as that individual stays behind that locked door, Amy, the doctor and the nurse, as well as the other patients, should be safe.

Ward D" by Freida McFadden is a breathtaking and dark psychological thriller that follows one night shift of a medical student in a locked psychiatric unit. Nothing much happens until the middle of the book, but there is enough plot jumps to keep your head spinning. By gradually revealing their pasts, she establishes a stronger connection between readers and the characters, enhancing the overall reading experience. Speaking of which, Amy and Cameron were assigned patients they needed to follow throughout the evening. While the ending provides closure to the main narrative, some readers may have expected a more shocking or impactful conclusion. The overuse of the word crazy and the idea that the mentally ill ARE all violent is just reinforced by the "big twist" and ending of the book.

As for the psychiatric diagnoses, she sounded like she read straight from the DSM rather than actually knowing the information. It doesn't help when she is told by some of the patients that a dangerous patient that was supposed to be in seclusion is on the loose and threatens to kill them all. When I saw an audiobook written by her featuring a locked room mystery set in a psychiatric ward, it sounded far too intriguing to pass up. The novel is written in two time frames which is the present predicament that Amy as a medical student must face which is spending the night on the locked ward D.

I have read worse, and at times it made me lol as we follow the escapades of a medical student on rotation in the psych ward. Meanwhile, while Amy struggles to get through the night, she also struggles with something that makes her question her own sanity. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

For one thing, she has some familiarity with the psych ward as her best friend Jade was committed when they were both 16 years of age. I found the main character of this book to be a little annoying and I definitely prefer her books written from dual POV. I enjoyed the audio narration and fast pace, but if this setting isn't your cup of peach tea, take a pass! I'm generally a Freida fan, but oh my goodness this one was a giant disaster (I guess in my seemingly unpopular opinion based on Goodreads and bookstagram). First and foremost, the mental health rep was done in such a negative way, I worry that those who suffer from the illnesses represented will be further stigmatized. In conclusion, Ward D is a tense and gripping psychological thriller that showcases Freida McFadden’s talent for storytelling. LMFAOOOOOO this is giving me 1) person just escaped from a cult and is discovering modern day society for the first time and 2) a mom saying "awww that's great sweetie" when their young child shares a picture of an alleged horse that looks more like roadkill. And to make matters even worse, one of the patients there was someone that Amy knew very personally.
