Mount Gay Rum | Cocktails Mount Gay Rum | Cocktails

For over three hundred years, the distinct and pure character of Mount Gay rums has come from distillation in traditional column and copper pot stills. A ground-breaking distillation technique in 1703, this process has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since. The ageing process is particularly unpredictable in the tropical Caribbean climate, and at Mount Gay, we prefer to talk about maturing. In two or three years, our rums can reach the same level of maturity as an eau-de-vie aged for two or three times as long in a temperate climate. Barbados is one of the most densely populated island nations in the world. Hundreds of years ago, Mount Gay could rely on the molasses from local sugar cane for all of its needs, but that’s no longer the case as there simply isn’t enough available land anymore. In addition, while there used to be nearly 40 sugarcane refineries on the island, only one remains active today. So, although the distillery relies on sugarcane sourced from around the Caribbean, it only imports varieties that are native to Barbados.Sounds good, but how do the new bottlings fare? Let’s taste (including a comparison against a 2008 vintage bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old). The coconut notes are particularly good. Its not very spicy. There is interaction with the wood but it doesn’t seem to have developed beyond a little buttery spiciness. This is a light and sweet bajan style of rum which has a wonderful balance to it. The 18th century was a time of oceanic exploration, discovery and pirateering. Many told stories of reaching the islands of the Caribbean. Of blinding white sands and waters of emerald and sapphire. Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky Highlands Single Malt Whisky Island Single Malt Whisky Islay Single Malt Whisky Lowland Single Malt Whisky Speyside Single Malt Whisky Blended Scotch Whisky Flavour: Slightly sweet and smoky. It is very mild and does not burn on the palate at all. I could detect vanilla, spices (cloves, nutmeg), coconut, butterscotch, cocoa and a slight woodiness.

Mount Gay 1703 Old Cask | Rum Ratings

On the nose: Light fruity and floral scents that make me think of peaches, coconuts, golden kiwi and apples. Midway through, the ethanol becomes more pronounced and contends with the other scents.ABV rum from Barbados. This is the top rum from one of the oldest distilleries in the world, Mount Gay (outside of their specials). A blend of rums aged 10-30 years in American oak barrels. It is said that 55 different casks were used for the blend. My version is from 2018. Many of these stories weren’t believed, unless said adventurers returned with bottles or casks of Caribbean rum - bona fide proof of a sailor’s journey. Final Thoughts: Proof that rum can hold its own against other spirits as a respectable high end spirit. Lovely, complex but subtle, nuanced and a wonderful rum to sip and contemplate. It is very close. These are both very, very similar, but I think maybe I could tell them apart as this one was ever so slightly sweeter (but just barely). Otherwise, they are both about the same to me.
