About this deal

I have enjoyed reading it so much and I can feel drops of water crawling down my cheeks as I have finished it. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

A far cry from traditional middle-grade fiction, this British import is an eye-opening but long-winded account of life in a dingy shelter hotel. After being one of the best book series ever in my opinion, this was where the Girls series came crashing down. These were my least favourite Jacqueline Wilson books when I was younger (why would you want to be a teenager talking about boys all the time when you could be the Suitcase Kid, cracking jokes at the expense of her horrible stepdad or Tracy Beaker, absolutely dominating the Dumping Ground?

The main character is 13, but this book talks quite openly about older boys pressuring the girls for sex, going to house parties and drinking straight vodka.Magda's lost her pet and is desperately upset (though the others didn't even know she still had a hamster! I mean, it is meant to be in a collection but if you read it on its own it’s just fine, as the story makes total sense as well, but if you want to you can read the first two books first, although I don’t feel it is necessary. When she starts talking to a mysterious boy online, Ellie tries to warn Nadine of the dangers of telling him too much. The characters in this book are great though when Ellie gets cross she can sometimes act like it is the end of the world .

None of the books in this series have aged well but this was definitely my least favourite of the 4. Magda`s lost her pet and is desperately upset (though the others didn`t even know she still had a hamster! At home there's the widowed dad who she feels never appreciated her mother, he is living with his girlfriend Anna and she suspects he's cheating on her with college girls.Everytime Magda or Russell would try to worm their ways back in, Nadine would sort them out and stand up for Ellie. Of course, Ellie would normally turn to her friends at a time like this but Nadine and Magda are getting frustrated with her. I still today recommend her books to younger girls I know, and I hope that they will find the same joy as I did while reading her books. It’s a weird combination, and as a result I cringed inwardly several times when the girls would talk about sex/pressures from boys to take things ‘further’ etc.
