Admittedly I haven’t seen the film in maybe a couple of decades (and I haven’t seen the Extended Version, which isn’t available on this edition) but from my vague recollection I swear the optical effects look better here. Try to imagine Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings condensed into one film and you will get the idea (though that would have worked for The Hobbit).

Dune has been reborn on Blu-ray with exquisite visuals, wonderful characters, and a stoic storyline that is gearing up for some epic battles on other planets. There is good separation as well as layering; the subsonic hum of the ships while troops march and dialogue exposits, for example. The performances, visual effects, score, camera work, and storytelling are all stunning and wonderful. Even the moments out in the day on the film’s titled planet look dark thanks to a rather heavy sepia/yellow filter. Digitally there are no compression issues, and the original source is in fine fettle, there is still the occasional white spec, and grain is very organic in nature. Its astonishing production design and visual effects can now be appreciated anew in this spellbinding 4K restoration, accompanied by hours of comprehensive bonus features. It took the combined talents of Italian born mega-producer Dino De Laurentiis and visionary director David Lynch to make it actually happen. From Oscar Isaac's ( The Card Counter) strong turn as the Duke, to Rebecca Ferguson's ( Mission: Impossible - Fallout) wonderful blend of vulnerability and sorcery as his consort, Lady Jessica, mother to the ostensible 'messiah' of the saga - Paul Atreides - played by Timothée Chalamet, who showed promise in Netflix's The King and rises to the challenge of leading this epic. Bass is well catered for: explosions, ship engines and sandworm movements all benefitting from the sub's input; LF effects are reasonably plentiful with the score, also, taking a portion. The blue eyes on the native people are eye-popping as well along with some of the lighting used within the confines of the sandy castle complex.

There are also some behind-the-scenes photos (where you get to see those infamous tires all burning in the background) and there is a gallery devoted to posters and home video art (as well as scans from the Japanese program). Many actions happen with little motive or explanation, a deal of suspension of disbelief is needed to get through it unscathed. The native 4K image is spectacular in terms of detail, colouring and black level, while the DTS-HD MA 5. Josh Brolin brings some heavyweight support to his weapons master role, Jason Momoa embraces the inner warrior as the swordsman who Paul rightly idolises, whilst Zendaya ( Spider-Man - No Way Home) and Javier Bardem ( Skyfall) are suitably enigmatic as prominent players in the powerful desert tribe, the Fremen. He talks about the origins of words in the film, places them in their proper context, and relates everything to what Herbert was trying to convey in his stories, which the film entirely misses (Herbert’s book warns of how a demagogue comes to power while the film treats them like a hero).longtime fans of Herbert's creation, though it at least had the luxury of time to develop plot and characters.

Destination Dune (HD; 6:16) reaches way back into the archives with a 1983 featurette directed by Paul M.Such depth and characterisation are conveyed in less than ten minutes of screen time, such is the complexity of the writing, such is the skill of Lynch, such is the power of the film. Detailing the warring Houses, the fighting, the vehicles - including those nifty ornithopters, the desert, the worms, the Baron, the costumes and the score, this is a comprehensive look behind this epic production. House Atreides, led by Duke Leto Atreides is rightfully put in place by the Emperor, though he fears their growing power, and so finances House Harkonnen and its despicable Baron, to attack and take over Dune, killing everyone. There's no doubt going to be a big collector's set with multiple commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and more coming out in the future, but for now, these few extras are worthy and entertaining.
