Expanding on the Beach Boys inspiration that had defined some of Up's finest moments ("At My Most Beautiful,""Parakeet"), Reveal is the summery counterpart to its wintry predecessor. And while it isn't quite a triumph on the same level (yeah, read my review), Reveal is an excellent album in its own right. One of the great things about R.E.M.'s musical history is how they've managed to retain a distinctive sound while releasing a series of sonically diverse albums. The wistful ruminations of Automatic for the People evoked images of the grandiose and darkly beautiful. New Adventures in Hi-Fi served as a companion piece to the barren yet oddly gorgeous landscape of the west. And despite all this change, R.E.M. has always remained R.E.M.Reveal received a warm reception from the critics, with Q awarding it five stars and the Los Angeles Times’ Robert Hilburn suggesting it represented R.E.M.’s “return to its signature sound after a lengthy period of sonic experimentation”. The band’s fanbase also gave the record a hearty thumbs up, and Reveal’s overall worldwide sales eventually hit an extremely healthy four million, with the LP’s sturdy lead single, “Imitation Of Life,” going Top 10 in the UK and providing the band with their very first Japanese No.1.

That is, until two years later, when the In Time retrospective was released. A mixed bag of the band's latter-day output, which skipped most of my favourite songs from the era, but in listening to it in my car for some time, the songs that I found myself returning to frequently were "All the Way to Reno" and "Imitation of Life", the two songs from Reveal. The big western guitar style of "All the Way to Reno". The soaring choruses, the stateliness of the songs. charts.nz R.E.M.– Reveal" (ASP). Hung Medien. Collapse Into Now debuted at No.5 in the US Billboard 200 and also peaked at No.5 in the UK Top 40, where the record went on to go silver. However, while the band conducted a series of promotional interviews, they remained true to their word about not touring the record. On 11 September, six months to the day of the LP’s release, R.E.M. officially announced their amicable split, with Mike Mills telling Rolling Stone, “There’s no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We’ve made this decision amicably and with each other’s best interests at heart. The time just feels right. The band’s legacy Larkin, Colin (2007). The Encyclopedia of Popular Music (4thed.). Stipe’s voice comes out thin and weak at the beginning of “I’ll Take the Rain”, matching the despairing lyrics. However, at that point, the instrumentals (well-developed, if not particularly strong) hint at the cheerful nihilism of the upcoming chorus. It pairs self-empowering but melancholic lyrics with optimistic instrumentation and vocals, yielding a sound like sunlight filtering between clouds on a rainy day. Ivie, Devon. In a bouncy and bassy recreation of Western music, “All the Way to Reno (You’re Gonna Be a Star)” features the addition of bubbly synthesizers and a delightful guitar riff to close out the verses. “You know what you are / You’re gonna be a star”, says Michael Stipe. Whether it’s genuine or sarcastic, he slams you in the face with his quiet sincerity. R.E.M.– Reveal– hitparade.ch" (ASP). Hung Medien (in German). Swiss Music Charts . Retrieved 2012-01-25.

Long, April (May 21, 2001). "REM: Reveal". NME. Archived from the original on March 4, 2016 . Retrieved August 27, 2012. Sometime in the late nineties, REM started to drift over to a form of baroque pop. Their songs were increasingly patterned after "Man on the Moon", and with each single that echoed it, they seem to try to improve the song. My first impression of Reveal was that it was an entire album of these songs and they all blurred together into one faded, blown-out mass, like the liner notes' series of overexposed copies of the cover art. Even with the incorporation of unusual instrumentation and burbling electronic sound, the songs take many listens to differentiate themselves from one another. So when this album came out, I bought it as a dutiful REM fan, but shortly thereafter shelved it and forgot about it. Radiohead's Thom Yorke was going through a period of extreme depression during the late 1990s, which led to severe stage fright. Around that time, Yorke and Michael Stipe were close friends, and Stipe advised Yorke to tell himself: "I'm not here, this isn't happening" whenever he felt he was losing emotional control. This motto eventually became the chorus of Radiohead's " How to Disappear Completely", from Kid A (2000). In turn, this song supposedly inspired Stipe to write Reveal 's "Disappear". [10] In a 2019 interview with NME, Stipe recounted telephoning Yorke after realizing the shared inspiration, apologizing for supposedly stealing the concept behind their song, only for Yorke to respond by stating that it was more R.E.M.'s song than Radiohead's upon hearing Stipe recite the lyrics to "Disappear".
