About this deal

The Alperton Angels were a cult led by Gabriel, now in prison, planning to kill a baby thought to be the Anti-Christ, fortunately this does not come to pass as the teenage mother, Holly, flees the cult, but the Angels go on to commit suicide rather than face prison. The minute we received a proof, we knew we had to invite Janice to join us on the metaphorical sofa for an interview. I certainly felt I was putting into practise all I’d learned writing the first two books, and delivering a story that is hopefully more procedural and satisfying to follow.

Additionally she has unwelcome competition in the form of Oliver Menzies chasing the same scoop, and with whom she has a traumatic past history. I was so tired of reading the ramblings of conspiracy theorists and “flaky” characters that I almost gave up, the ending didn’t merit this torture! I was drawn in and entertained from the beginning and impressed by how brilliantly the author built a complex plot with well-developed characters using the mixed media format. When battle lines are quickly drawn between the families, and consequently, between the Khutans and the community, cue a build up of uncomfortable incidents to a reckoning where it’s clear someone is going to get injured. Luckily Janice Hallett delves into that desire and presents us with a legal alternative: this book ! When she agrees to cooperate in a documentary (the crew see Baftas lining up, their duty of care to a vulnerable mother sadly missing), Nora hopes to raise someone’s memory… but will doing so risk her son’s life and her own? A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

In that respect, it harks back to Hallett's debut 'The Appeal' as it gives the reader the opportunity to get stuck into things, trying to put together the pieces of this incredibly complicated puzzle.

It’s all quite tangled, which makes for a satisfying read and for me, one of Ruth’s best investigations. There were also differences in reports of what police and social workers were present at the time of the Alperton deaths. In her second book, The Twyford Code, I connected hard with the characters thanks to some clever twistiness and she still had the nice puzzle element, even leveled up a little.

Amanda’s main aim is to discover the whereabouts of a baby who was the focus of the cult’s activities. Dit intrigerende mysterie zorgt voor een erg leuke leeservaring, want het is een gelaagd, sterk uitgedacht, origineel opgebouwd en knap geconstrueerd geheel dat je aan het denken zet.The name Alperton means "farmstead or estate associated with a man named Ealhbeorht", deriving from an Anglo-Saxon personal name and tūn, meaning farmstead or village in Old English. I much prefer writing in the first person, where I can jump into that character and see the world from their perspective. Massively addictive and a true page-turner, this book will have you going around in circles like mad. A lot of coincidences had to pile up to make the story as bizarre as it was, so seeing it all unravelled felt almost underwhelming.

Two surviving members, Jonah and Holly, both teenagers and their baby have withdrawn from the public eye since then. The towpath of the Grand Union Canal in Alperton has been used for various scenes in the BBC TV soap EastEnders. There was something very captivating about their dynamic - there was a deep-seated enmity between the two - an unspoken challenge that while they were both vying for the covetous position of being the first to break the story - it never let on that there was something more lurking beneath their conversations - some hidden agenda that was taking root of which the readers were bereft to. As she and her newly assigned partner albeit reluctantly, Oliver Menzies, track down the clues and investigate possible suspects that had the potential to be a part of the crime, there's this latent current of something else brewing between their relationship. But of course, news about Daisy’s whereabouts remains ever present, so much so that she’s unable to function properly. It’s the start of a new life after a few incidents that necessitated their moving, and while their new home is comfortable, it comes with a certain level of discomfort.
