Its bad enough he comes across as pompous and arrogant, but his idea of "hard evidence" is a cavalcade of assumptions, supposition, probablys and possiblys. A barrister and teacher, educated at Winchester College and the University of Oxford, Druitt drowned himself shortly after his sudden dismissal as an assistant head at a London school.

The slayings never faded from public consciousness, however. Legions of “Ripperologists” have developed their own theories over the decades, and the lineup of possible suspects has included the father of Winston Churchill, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” author Lewis Carroll, and Prince Albert Victor, grandson of Queen Victoria and second in line to the British throne. Since he hadn't seen her for a few days, Donovan asked her were she had been? "In the infirmary," she replied, weakly. He allowed her to go to the kitchen, where she remained until the early hours of Saturday morning, the 8th of September, 1888. At 1.35 a.m. three men - Joseph Lawende, Joseph Hyam Levy and Harry Harris saw her talking with a man at the Church Passage entrance into Mitre Square, located on the eastern fringe of the City of London. Police who worked the case at the time of the murders would not have been surprised to see Kosminski’s name linked to the crime. At the time of the murders, Kosminski was among the handful of primary suspects. The youngest of seven children, Kosminski was born in Klodawa, Poland, in 1865. After the death of his father, the family fled the pogroms flamed by Poland’s Russians rulers and immigrated to London’s Whitechapel section in 1881.The police were sent for, and a doctor was summoned, who pronounced life extinct. It was noted that, although, as in the cases of the previous victims, the woman's throat had been cut, the rest of the body had not been mutilated. This led the police to deduce that Diemschutz had interrupted the killer when he turned into Dutfield's Yard. To me, all of the above is ridiculous and a prime example of people trying to bend facts to make it fit a theory. But now, to examine the science. At 11.30 p.m. that night, Annie turned up at Crossingham's lodging house, and asked Timothy Donovan if she could sit in the kitchen. The body was removed to the nearest mortuary - which still stands, albeit as a ruin, in the nearby churchyard of St George-in-the-East, and here she was identified as Elizabeth Stride. Almost a century later historians found records of an Aaron Kosminski, who was working in Whitechapel as a hairdresser at the time of the killings before being admitted to an asylum in 1891. I believe he has probably hit the nail on the head by going with Kosminski and he is not alone in choosing this suspect. He bought at auction a shawl that was supposed to have belonged to Catherine Eddowes, the 4th victim and had it extensively tested thru DNA to find out if the story connected with the shawl was true or not. There were several sightings of her over the course of the next five hour, and, by midnight, she had found her way to Berner Street, off Commercial Road.

THE FUNERAL OF ANNIE CHAPMAN

One of the sisters of the deceased laid a beautiful wreath on the coffin as it was placed in the hearse, and at the graveside a wreath of marguerites was added by a sympathetic kinswoman. Instead, the theory goes that he was Nathan Kaminsky, a poor Whitechapel bootmaker described as violently antisocial, and the police had simply confused his name with Kosminski.

I really enjoyed learning the fine details about DNA testing, tracing and the results and what they mean, it was explained well in simplistic terms. She appears to have enjoyed a cordial relationship with the other tenants, and the deputy keeper, Timothy Donovan, remembered her as being an inoffensive soul whose main weakness was a fondness for drink. The parts of the book that dealt with the DNA testing made my eyes glaze over as science has never been my forte in life and it was really complicated to fully understand. Also as many other reviewers have noted, he does spend some time throughout the book injecting his own life story into the book. It annoyed a great deal of people, and while I found it a little unsettling and unimportant at times, overall I will give him a pass as he felt his own stories made him more empathetic to the plight of the victims. At 5.30 that morning, Elizabeth Long saw her talking with a man outside number 29, in Hanbury Street, but, since there was nothing suspicious about the couple, she continued on her way, hardly taking any real notice. Finally, since Dr Louelainen was working in his own time and alone, we cannot, I'm afraid to say, rule out the possibility that he deliberately or accidentally contaminated the slides with modern DNA.

THEY MOVE TO LONDON AND SEPARATE

Ten minutes later, at 1.45 am. Police Constable Alfred Watkins walked his beat into Mitre Square and discovered her horrifically mutilated body lying in the darkness of the Square's South West corner. also just because he spend part of his “holiday” working a bit for money does not make him relate or understand the hardships of prostitution in victorian times! or any time! The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the cemetery, the service being conducted by the chaplain, the Rev. Mr. Dunscombe. Mr. G. C. Hawkes, a vestryman of St. Luke's, undertook the responsibility of carrying out the funeral at his own expense, and the City authorities, to whom the burial ground belongs, remitted the usual fees.
