She was pouring a pint and she smiled at me and she was going to say something but the beer spilt over the top. Dads Ghost was wearing the same clothes Dad was wearing the last time I saw him which was at breakfast on the day he died when I made him cross because I wanted the PlayStation. And when I was looking at them Big Vic looked at me and normally when he looked at me he smiled or said something funny like Oi Philip its your round.

It goes back to my belief in instinct rather than premeditated thought being a better way to go about things, whether writing a novel or living a life that’s true to itself. Maybe Uncle Alan isn’t such a bad guy … Haig does a great job of assuming the voice of an 11-year-old.Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Dead Fathers Club written by Matt Haig which was published in 2006–. In The Dead Fathers Club, you have chosen to reimagine not merely a classic but arguably the classic work of English literature. Phillip– The protagonist, Phillip, is assigned to the task of avenging his father’s murder by murdering his Uncle. This, if anything, is the message I wanted to get across: to do the right thing we sometimes have to take the unexpected path. In the end, he does not hurt Philip but makes Philip promise not to tell Leah anything, as he worries it will break her.His most impressive feat is the level of emotion and intensity he maintains through many of the scenes. It wasnt like a normal reflection it was like a reflection of a reflection and I turned round and it was Dads Ghost and I said Dad? But that day he looked away as soon as his eyes touched my eyes as if looking at my eyes could be dangerous or make him ill or as if my eyes had lasers in them that cut him in half. So when producer Paul Ruben was pondering who should narrate a story told in the voice of an 11-year-old boy, he went for the real thing. Is Uncle Alan sincere in his apparent indulgence and generosity toward Philip, or is he, as the ghost insists, secretly plotting to kill both Philip and his mother?

Then I asked him if he sees other ghosts and he said There are lots of ghosts in Newark and they take some getting used to because they are all from different ages.

The plucky hero impressively navigates the gloomy, pungent waters of retribution, death and guilt, and Haig gives an enviable job of leavening a sad premise through the words and actions of a charming, resilient young man. Many of Haig’s characters, including Uncle Alan (Claudius), Philip’s mother (Gertrude), Leah (Ophelia), and Ross and Gary (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern) have clear parallels in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

She turned to see where I was looking but she couldnt see anything and Dads Ghost was now telling me to follow him with his hand. Through Phillip, and the struggles Phillip has with his father’s ghost, we see the cruelty of death, the desire to make sense out of an nonsensical event. We are already on our second full shipment of this terrific novel and we’re getting such great responses from the early readers. And Mum looked behind her at the line of sad people and then said to Janice Greenfield in a quiet voice How can I get my card back? I didn’t want there to be a straightforward happy ending, but I wanted there to be some kind of hope.

The novel opens on the day of the funeral for eleven-year-old Philip Noble’s father, Brian, who has died in a car accident. Even though I knew how the story might end, I was gripped by the humor and plot twists and, shucks, shear curiosity to see how it all comes out. You are meant to be frightened when you see a ghost but I was not frightened because it felt completely normal which is weird because I had never seen a ghost before. In regard the latter, do you feel that the reason a lot of young people don’t take to reading is because they feel that traditional teen-lit is a bit patronising? One of the joys (for those familiar with Hamlet) is figuring out at what points Haig's work diverges.
