About this deal

There were some parts of this book I really enjoyed and some parts that left me feeling a little disappointed. Nancy finds herself surrounded by elite and privileged student and she feels at times an outcast especially against Jamie, her former friend.

There are already chapters including Jamie (who they were also once close with), which could’ve been perfect opportunities to flesh out them out, but ended up lacking instead. I did also really appreciate the author's descriptions of the major pressures that students, and especially Asian American students in private schools like Sinclair Prep, experience on a day to day basis. In her spare time, Katie enjoys reading, singing, dancing (badly), and checking out new photo-worthy restaurants. HOW WE FALL APART is a twisty academic thriller about the children of immigrants fighting to stay top of their classes as their former best friend dies – and they’re accused of the murder by an anonymous social media poster. An entertaining start to YA thriller/mystery series showing the darkside of academia life in a prestigious Preparatory School and with characters who have plenty of secrets to hide.Nancy Luo is shocked when her former best friend, Jamie Ruan, top ranked junior at Sinclair Prep, goes missing, and then is found dead.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while now but I wasn’t sure of what I was going to find in it, and now that I’ve read your input on it I’ll definitely give it a shot.

It’s almost like we jump into the book running (perhaps sprinting wouldn’t be the wrong word either) and don’t stop until the end. It’s is a dark academia about the pressures on high-achieving children of immigrants, and the lengths they’re go to meet the expectations. Nancy is even more shocked when word starts to spread that she and her friends--Krystal, Akil, and Alexander--are the prime suspects, thanks to "the Proctor," someone anonymously incriminating them via the school’s social media app.

When I slowly began to realise the plot wasn’t working for me, I was somewhat holding onto the characters, hoping they would carry the story on, but it felt like I was reading a story that wasn’t quite complete. As rumors spread that Jamie was murdered, an anonymous post on Tip Tap, the school's gossip app, from "The Proctor" points to Jamie's best friends--Nancy, Krystal Choi, Akil Patel, and Alexander Lin--as the prime suspects. It was quickly paced and tackled lots of real life issues especially in Asian culture pertaining to high family expectations/pressures and mental illness. The story begins with Nancy presenting to her school; when Jamie fails to make it, she thinks nothing of her ex-friend’s no show. How it explains the ways Nancy feels like she must always succeed because it isn't only about her future, but about her past. Nancy is even more shocked when word starts to spread that she and her friends – Krystal, Akil, and Alexander – are the prime suspects, thanks to “the Proctor,” someone anonymously incriminating them via the school’s social media app.

The death of their once former friend is enough to bring them back together as they try to figure out who could’ve gotten ahold of their secrets and beat the Proctor at their own game. Dark, deceptive, and deliciously deadly, How We Fall Apart cuts to the core of the Asian American experience through a fast-paced, twisty academia thriller. This story includes scenes of drug use, excessive bullying, suicide, and a romantic relationship between a teacher and a student. She grew up in Michigan, where there was little for her to do besides bury her nose in a good book or a writing journal. Gr 9 Up—In this dark, thrilling mystery, high school junior Nancy Luo's former best friend Jamie is found dead. Flashbacks throughout the novel shed light on the secrets Nancy and other members of her friend group are trying so hard to keep buried during the murder investigation. How We Fall Apart moves fast (and it gets dark fast); it’s very much action and plot-oriented, with the engaging writing and humor I’m familiar with from Zhao’s previous novels.
