Robot Workshop (5+) is about designing robots (using cardboard tiles rather than metal pieces, cogs and wheels) for space missions. The learning part is understanding what is required to carry out the tasks at hand. One of our favorite and innovative kids’ games for the iPad and now Fire tablet is Osmo, which uses a fun Montessori-like method to teach via physical objects—not normally what you’d expect from an tablet game. It’s simple stuff, but there’s obviously room to expand it almost endlessly and build up to very complex behaviors—all acted out in front of you by the endlessly charming Cozmo. Control is performed through a series of five apps for iOS or Android. All of the apps include tutorials to help your children (and you) learn how to build increasingly complex programs, before setting you free to code away.

Age Recommendation: Artie 3000 is suitable for children aged 7 and above. However, younger children can also enjoy the experience with parental assistance. For our next test, we selected menu along the top of the App and selected the Artie Max UI. Instead of the easy follow the lead control option, this language did require a bit of fine motor control. She struggled a bit at first to drop the tools into the repeat command. Unlike some of the others toys and games on this list, the Anki Cozmo isn’t primarily designed with coding in mind. First and foremost, it’s a charming, fun, interactive robot, but that appeal could make it a great tool for engaging kids in its coding mini-games.include a large drawing board that will allow for the insertion and removal of drawing media as opposed to taping and removing sheets of paper from a surface We spent ages trying in vain to get Artie 3000 to connect with my MacBook Pro. In the end, we resorted to Syd’s Windows laptop, which worked first time. I guess Artie isn’t a fan of fruity gadgets! Once he was connected, Syd and I set to work on the first of the 3 lessons included with Artie3000. As the video shows, you can choose to select the pre-installed commands, or do the actual coding yourself. We did the pre-installed command first, then Syd and I tried our hand at coding. Parents have said there has been a great reaction from their kids, they want to play again and it is easy for the children to use and remember. It is also great for the imaginations of kids while teaching them how to code; the noises and visuals are entertaining.

I used the drag and drop feature to design my first test drawing. I decided on a square. Here is the code: The vibrant blue-colored rear panel provided a large oblique view of the Artie Max Robot, several geometric drawings, the 8+ logo, and three product features: 1. You Code, Artie Draws. 2. Simple Setup. 3. Bonus features. The STEM technology promised the ability to learn to code line by line via the Artie Max setup. As you learn the techniques, you can expand the skills to create even more complicated designs. The makers claim that the heavy-duty carbon fiber body with nylon-reinforced nose and motor mount are “near indestructible”. If your paper plane flies out of range, the onboard computer will even safely land itself.

It’s great for teaching children spatial awareness, sequential logic and basic coding skills.
