How many different patterns can you see in the illustrations. Can you try to recreate some of these… or use them in your own artwork? Immediately, the eerie voices seem strange. Then the first big wave hits and emotion follows. I'm not a meditator in any sense but an hour later I wake up from a state between asleep and awake having been through a journey of memories and vivid imaginations. I am now more clear about my goals and ready to pursue them. myNoise has become my calming escape where I recharge and reassess. Whatever she was, wherever she came from, one mermaid in particular was treated vilely by the citizens of Conwy. She was caught in the nets of local fishermen, and taken onto shore. As they paraded her around town, she began to choke to death, unable to breathe the air on land for such a long time. She could breathe in the sea, but here on land, she was drowing. Everyone ignored her pleas to be returned to the sea so that she might live. McDermid wrote The Mermaids Singing in response to themes of misogyny she saw appearing in detective fiction. According to McDermid,

Wow, it sounds like the merpeople's song from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but with more waves. This sounds so cool! McDermid, Val (29 October 2009). "Complaints about women writing misogynist crime fiction are a red herring". The Guardian . Retrieved 10 April 2023. The first mermaid was an ancient Syrian goddess. In 1000 b.c., Atargatis (pictured above) dove into a lake with the desire to become a fish after accidentally killing a human shepherd she loved. Instead, she retained her human form from the waist up but her bottom half transformed into the tail of a fish. This mermaid’s tale was first recorded by folklorist William Bottrell in 1873. She came one day to the church at Zennor and everyone was taken with this beautiful stranger who sang the hymns so beautifully. The village folk had no idea that Morveren was one of the daughters of Llyr, king of the ocean. They clamoured for her attention, eager to hear her lovely voice, and put themselves forward as suitors. She took a liking to one man named Mathew Trewhella, said to have the best singing voice in Zennor. She smiled at him, bid him follow her to the cliffs, and Matthew Trewhella was never seen again.

When you next visit a mermaid’s location, look around you and savour what you see. Why would this location be ripe for mermaid myths, compared to other places in the area? What springs to mind as you look at the weather, the lay of the land, and consider the lives of people who have passed this way centuries before? What do you see when you look out onto the waters? Ireland also has its fair share of mermaid mythology. According to folklore, if you walk the Bay cliffs of Bantry in County Cork you may espy a number of mermaids splashing in the waves.

A mermaid is half-human with a fish’s tail. Can you create a creature that is a mixture of two or more animals? Mermaids are known as beautiful aquatic creatures that used their voices to enchant sailors and fall in love with them. On a final note, consider this: perhaps the real mermaid isn’t the one the folklore tales speak of, but the one looking out at the water, looking for a sign. With all those tales of interbreeding among finfolk and humans, perhaps it’s brine that runs through your veins, though you may not know it. A thoroughly captivating and evocative memoir; one that’s been reissued this year courtesy of independent publisher, Muswell Press. For me, the story provides travel writing at its very best: an opportunity to escape in time and space to experience a world in vivid colour and vibrancy, penned by a writer with exceptional skill – truly a must-read.

Mermaid sightings in the UK are often attributed to seals and superstition, but that’s not the whole story. The folk of the sea – both feared and revered – are an entrenched part of British folklore. It’s time to talk about how mermaid mythology still exerts a tidal pull on this windswept island. Aquatic Habitation - Sirens can survive and adapt to underwater environments such as high water pressure and extreme water temperatures. The Singing Mermaid by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks is adapted for the stage by Barb Jungr and Samantha Lane with music and songs by Barb Jungr.

I usually steer clear of "eerie" generators, as I'm really sensitive to becoming worked up or uncomfortable, but when I saw a new Magic Generator had been released I HAD to try it. Though certainly eerie, this isn't scary, but gives you a feeling more like dissonance in music does. My imagination started up as soon as I heard this - I felt just like Odysseus lashed to his mast must have felt. Carry out a role-play activity at the point when Sam Sly asks the mermaid to join his circus. Should she go? What are the pros / cons of joining? Absolutely amazing! I love the sea and underwater generators the most (alongside with many of the tonal drones and maybe my new favorite: Circular Breeze) and this to me is the perfect combination. After a couple of refreshes I was greeted with a lovely, serene underwater landscape with scuba breathing. It was a perfect sound blend to work the day away. Who done it? The main difference between mermaids and Sirens is that the latter are predators, killers, and dangerous creatures. Seducing men with their voices and bodies. Mermaids may not necessarily kill men, like Sirens do. Absolutely mesmerizing! I could listen to this for days! All of my negative thoughts and anxiety seems to be pacified by the wonderful tranquility that this generator produces. Thank you, Stephane, you have amazed me once again! Hughes, Sarah (7 February 2020). "Val McDermid: 'Giving a seven-figure advance to a debut is a terrible thing to do to a writer' ". inews.co.uk. dmg media . Retrieved 10 April 2023. Just as the man reached out to grab the gold, the mermaid dived down into the pond in terror. Whether it was because of his foul language or whether she took fright at being beaten at her own challenge, we’ll never know. The mermaid has not been seen since, but if you come to the water and speak softly and politely, she may re-appear. The Cursing Mermaid of Colmonell

Mermaids Calling has me ready to leave all my Earthly possessions behind and take a dive in a faraway turquoise bay in the Mediterranean. I think I'm in love. One version of the folklore legend has it that a resident mermaid was so distraught at being maligned by locals that she dived into the pool and stayed there, hiding from humanity evermore. This indicates that she might have been quite friendly with humans previously, and sighted on a regular basis. These lovely Mermaid Early Writing Activities are a wonderful resource to encourage your children to write about mermaids and merpeople. This is really my go-to sound on here. I just love how it all meshes together to give me something almost ethereal to listen to when I'm trying to focus. The combination of the water and bubbles, the almost chorus like ringing, the quiet chanting voice, all of it just comes together to make it an easy choice for me.

Siren Song - Sirens are able to emit a captivating singing voice that lures anyone who hears it toward the singer. Apparently those who are exposed to it have lingering side effects; the exact nature of these symptoms are as of yet not clearly defined. Ben compares it to a drug, describing it as something he needs. Eventually, the Siren Song leads the person that hears it to hallucinate seeing that mermaid everywhere and hearing their Siren Song out in the ocean. The person will then be driven into the water to find that mermaid and eventually drown. The song can be effective on anything or anyone, including men, women, and even animals. The people of the Orkney Isles say that ‘the finned people’ or the finned folk live among them, a result of inter-breeding through the centuries.
