About this deal

An opportunity arises when a wealthy German merchant, Jakob Fugger, arrives in Venice and is said to be looking for an artist to paint an altarpiece for St Peter’s Basilica. The main reason I'm rating this book higher than I initially wanted to is because it taught me a lot about art from this era and inspired me to want to seek these out next time I visit a museum. Jednym z najbardziej fascynujących aspektów tej książki jest jej zdolność do przenoszenia czytelnika w różne epoki historyczne i miejsca na całym świecie.

In nature, in the magnificent edifices of Venice, in fabrics and in the faces of the people, and of course in art. kolory - W powieści pojawiają się także inne kolory, które mają swoje znaczenia, takie jak purpurowy, który może oznaczać magię lub niezwykłość, oraz biały, który symbolizuje czystość i niewinność. A compelling thriller that takes us to the heart of sixteenth century Venice where the world's most famous painters compete to win the greatest commission of their lives. With its themes of colour and invention, atmosphere of dark drama and revolutionary light, of grandeur and decadence, this is a searing tale of creation, ambition, rivalry and passion at one of the most seismic turning points in history. Having a novel set in Venice all about painting is right up my street, given I love art and Venice is one of my favourite cities.

Surfaces such as newly rendered walls, natural stone, mud bricks, rammed earth, even canvas, can be painted directly. BAUWERK Limewash paints are perfect for all masonry surfaces, like render, bricks, mud brick, strawbale that’s where it works best as it is absorbed into the wall leaving a breathable surface that is protected by the natural properties of the paint. When he was growing up, the idea would have been absurd…” The ideal of an artist wanting to make a mark upon history is paramount in this story. Winning a commission to paint a portrait of the man's wife, Sybille, Zorzo thinks he has found a way into the merchant's favour.

I feel the author could have bypassed the failed romance and actually took the book into another direction. I understand that he was supposed to be sort of fascinated with her, but it drained the relationship of much passion and made me care less when things went awry, and get more frustrated that he tried to help her.Immense detail is given in describing the character’s clothing and each scene is connected with a reflection of the colour in the merchant’s wife’s clothing. It’s also a very good one; although the subject reminded me of another of my recent reads, The Fugitive Colours by Nancy Bilyeau, the setting gives it a very different feel. There is no denying that Dibben shows extraordinary attention to detail when it comes to bringing sixteenth century Venice to life – you feel as though you are walking alongside Zorzo through this dangerous journey he undertakes.

The description of the painter's studio with jars of pigments, pestles and mortars and grinding glasses, is a wonderful backdrop to this spellbinding story. I really am a sucker for books that are about painters in Renaissance Italy and the fact that it's set in Venice I also found really amazing because I feel like most are set in Rome or Florence. As you turn over the last page, you’ll know with certainty that Dibben trained as an artist and scenic designer prior to writing novels. In this episode he takes us back to 1510, an extraordinary moment when some of the most famous works of European art were being created. At least the ones I've read in the past have been set in those cities so it's been nice to read one set in Venice.
