About this deal

The testing of Scottoil showed it worked very well when you remember that it’s a constant loss system. This isn’t really designed to coat the outside of the chain plates, which while only cosmetic, can get a bit rusty if you haven’t got the delivery just so. Still though, they really do keep the rollers well lubed with little hassle. There are other chain oilers available too, like Tutoro, PDOiler and Loobman, but I don’t have any experience of these. Anecdotally, automatic oilers tend to be popular among their owners. The O-rings that seal the factory grease inside the chain sit on either side, between the inside and outside plates. The roller is not sealed, and sits in the centre Immersive chain waxing can be a bit of a hassle, but it’s a simple enough process and, as well as saving you money and watts, it could arguably save you time overall too. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media When it comes to keeping your dirt bike in tip-top shape, there are a few key things you need to do – one of which is keeping the chain properly lubricated. But what’s the best way to do that? Should you use chain wax or chain lube?

Doing so is a challenge, though. When you ride in wet or dirty conditions, your front wheel sprays huge amounts of contaminants onto your chain (although good mudguards can mitigate the effects to a degree). From there, the only way to reset the balance is to clean your drivetrain thoroughly. Chain wax – either a commercial blend (such as Molten Speed Wax or Silca Hot Melt), or you can source the raw ingredients yourself, based on FrictionFacts’ UltraFast chain lube formula. Once it’s been properly cleaned and treated though, waxed chains have, in our experience, an incredible ability to shrug off dirt and grime. X Dry is the newest lube from the team at Pedro's, formulated with its exclusive CleanTech Chemistry - X Dry uses advanced polymer technology that dries to a unique semi-fluid film and provides clean and long-lasting performance. We've found the X dry works excellent in dry to spring type conditions and runs very quietly. Be sure to clean you chain thoughly before appllication though, X-Dry works best on a very clean chain from the get-go.If you lube your chain on the outside, the lube is going to get flung off without penetrating the chain. Lube the inside and the centrifugal forces will help drive the lube through the chain, exactly where you want it to be! Mind your fingers Many users found that this product improved and maintained their motorcycle’s performance. One customer wrote, “Lasts a while and so far no chain problem.” Another commented, “I used it on my motorcycle and it did quiet the chain.”

It needs to be totally spotless, inside and out, because any residual oil or grease will contaminate your wax and make it harder for the wax to adhere to your chain. Another good option is a dry chain lube. Dry is a bit misleading – it’s still liquid but it comes out as more of a spray than a liquid, coats the chain well and is hard to overspray. But some people prefer a good old ‘wet’ chain lube which has greater longevity, especially in wet weather. How to apply motorcycle chain lube In our experience, the hard part of immersive waxing is usually the initial chain cleaning process. This can be done by cleaning the entire drivetrain with a degreaser before applying the wax lube. To apply wax lube when the chain is wet, simply put a small amount on each link and then rotate the pedals until all of the links are coated with wax (it’s okay if there’s still some liquid residue). Wipe off any excess with a clean rag before riding. By cleaning and waxing multiple chains from the start, you can simply remove one chain from your bike when it needs re-waxing, and immediately swap on a freshly waxed chain with no delays.ZFC says immersive waxing and re-waxing at 300km intervals, or after every wet ride, can extend a chain’s lifespan to around 15,000km – about three times as long as what is typically achieved with standard drip lubes. This also helps massively extend the lifespan of the other, more expensive drivetrain components such as cassettes and chainrings. Once the chain links have been broken in, the chain can be re-installed on your bike. After 10 minutes of easy riding, your chain will be buttery smooth. Simon Bromley / Immediate Media Step 4 – Re-wax every 300-400km or after a wet ride So, Is Wax Lubricant Good For Bike Chains? Yes! Wax lubricant can provide long-lasting protection for your bike chain while repelling dirt and grime build-up.

Most of the kit required to wax chains is cheap, and you may have some of it at home already. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media Chain waxing kit list For watt-conscious racers who don’t fancy themselves as chain cookers, companies such as Ceramicspeed, Watt Shop and Zero Friction Cycling now sell pre-prepared waxed chains.

For commuters, we’d recommend a standard wet chain lube and good mudguards, with effective mud flaps. You’re left with a hard, dry layer of slippery wax on the chain, which reduces drivetrain friction and resists contamination.
