About this deal

Red pandas are considered full-grown around two years of age and reach the size of a fluffy house cat. They Can Endure Cold Weather Red pandas live in temperate climates in deciduous and coniferous forests. There is usually an understory of bamboo and hollow trees. The average temperature is 10 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the average annual rainfall is 350 centimeters.

Some bones protect vital organs in the red panda’s body. Their skulls protect their brain and the ribs protect their lungs. Red Pandas Have Furs In August 2010, archaeologists uncovered red panda fossil remains in Washington County in the US state of Tennessee. Although none are known to exist in the wild in North America today, it is believed the red panda thrived in the mountains of eastern Tennessee approximately 4.5 million years ago. At the San Diego Zoo, our red pandas serve as excellent wildlife ambassadors, and we hope they motivate our guests to help save wildlife. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP) for red pandas. The mission of an SSP program is to cooperatively manage threatened or endangered species populations within managed-care facilities. With this sense of hearing, red pandas’ sense of hearing helps them to escape from predators once they notice them around. Red Pandas Have Bones Habitat loss: Commercial logging, agriculture and roads have decreased and fragmented red panda habitat. Habitat fragmentation makes it difficult for the pandas to move to new feeding grounds when bamboo (the species’ main food source) goes through its cycles of mass flowering and die-off over large areas. While it is a big part of their diet, red pandas can digest only about 24 percent of the bamboo they eat. They need to consume 20 to 30 percent of their body weight, or about 2 to 4 lbs. (1 to 2 kg) of bamboo shoots and leaves per day. One study found that female red pandas eat about 20,000 bamboo leaves a single day, according to the San Diego Zoo. Habits They have large, round heads and short snouts with big, pointed ears. Their faces are white with reddish-brown “tear” marks that extend from the eyes to the corner of the mouth. These markings could have evolved to help keep the sun out of their eyes. Their tails are marked with alternating red and buff rings. Some taxonomists, as well as the ITIS and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), recognize two subspecies, while others argue for two separate species: the Himalayan red panda ( Ailurus fulgens) and the Chinese red panda ( Ailurus stanyi). Conservation status Mating occurs on the ground, and gestation appears to include a period of delayed implantation, which may be as short as 93 days or as long as 156 days. Reproduction expends a great deal of energy, so it is believed that a long gestation period may be the result of a slow metabolic rate. Late spring births also coincide with the emergence of the most tender and digestible bamboo shoots and leaves.

Breeding season takes place from January through April. During this time, red pandas come together in small groups, and cubs or adults may engage in social play that includes lunging, wrestling, and biting. If threatened, red pandas climb a tree or strike out with their semi-retractile claws. One of their primary predators is the snow leopard ( Uncia uncia).
