About this deal

The friendly, even wistful discussion includes plenty of praise for the actors with smaller roles, discussion of he and Connie Booth's writing process, and some perfectionist criticism of the little things that could have been done better.

The Cheap Tatty Review is an odd sketch of John playing Basil talking on the phone at the FT reception in which he insists to the unknown person on the other end that the series is finished. On one hand, most episodes depict Sybil being more together and intelligent than Basil, I would also put her in the wrong in several of the show's situations. Each six-episode season is given its own disc with a commentary track from John Howard Davies and Bob Spiers, directors of Season 1 and Season 2 respectively.

Fawlty Towers is a classic comedy which reflects the broadcast standards, language and attitudes of its time. Manuel bears the physical brunt of most of Basil's violent outbursts, whereas Polly slyly deflects or defuses Basil's complaints. These two are both interviewed by the same young guy who didn't strike me as being a typical Fawlty fan, if he is then I apologise in advance.

Excellent Fawlty Towers Collection which shows all the 12 original episodes as well as some other extra's. but "sitcom" is short for "situation comedy", and that's ultimately where "Fawlty Towers" derives most of its jokes. In ‘Basil the Rat’, waiter Manuel (Andrew Sachs)’s Siberian hamster turns out to be a rat, which goes missing just in time for a visit from the hotel inspector. The DVD box set also comes with a small eight-page colour booklet containing photographs and a bit about the background of the show.In ‘A Touch of Class’, Basil’s quest for a better class of clientele seems to have succeeded with the arrival at the hotel of Lord Melbury (Michael Gwynn). Interestingly, listening to these chats and hearing what Cleese thinks on an episode-by-episode basis probably improved my opinion of the show as a whole, so I suppose in that respect, it's excellent stuff; viewers should just be prepared for the incredibly laid-back atmosphere, which struck me as different than what might traditionally expected of a good commentary. I don't know how long ago it was, but I have a vague memory of watching the sixth episode of "Fawlty Towers". Fans of the series shouldn't worry though; it may not look better, but it doesn't look any worse than it ever has (a DVDTalk forum member mentions that it's brighter, which might be true, but all I have is my memory of the last DVD; I don't have it here to compare directly). Communication Problems' sees Basil (Cleese) forced to deal with a deaf guest while attempting to conceal his gambling win from Sybil (Prunella Scales).
