Ghostwatch Blu-ray (Standard Edition) Ghostwatch Blu-ray (Standard Edition)

British label 101 Films has officially announced that it will release on Blu-ray Lesley Manning's made-for-TV drama Ghostwatch (1992), starring Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith (XIX), Craig Charles, and Gillian Bevan. The release will be available for ... For many this Halloween TV special from 1992 has remained ingrained in their memory. Was it real or pure fiction many asked at the time?Considering the big deal around the original broadcast was that this was coming to you live (or at least you'd have the illusion that it was), Ghostwatch is still an exceptionally well done piece that is not only interesting but oft times genuinely tense and even actually scary. We don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but man, there is some seriously messed up stuff going on in this film and while you sort of see it coming and it's more than a little bit predictable, it still grabs you and gets under your skin. Sarah Greene and Craig Charles report from a reputedly haunted London home for the outside broadcast, while Michael Parkinson and Mike Smith stay in the warmth and "safety" of a BBC studio. The Early family are allegedly being harassed by the ghost 'Pipes', so named as his banging and crashing were initially attributed to bad plumbing. After a deliberately slow start the tension gradually builds, culminating in a terrifying crescendo. Although entirely fictional, the masterly combination of great scripting, intuitive direction and perfect casting made the supernatural pastiche appear frighteningly real. The Early's have gone to the press with their problems before but the tabloids blew it all into a joke at the family's expense. To hopefully get to the bottom of things, they get involved with a paranormal researcher who gets the BBC involved and of course, this is how Ghostwatch came to be. Ghostwatch arrives on Blu-ray from 101 Films in an AVC encoded 1080i high definition transfer framed at 1.33.1, which would likely have been its original broadcast aspect ratio. Shot using television broadcast video cameras, this doesn’t have the same sort of detail and texture that something that was shot on film or higher end digital video might have, but it very much does look like an early nineties TV broadcast, which is exactly how it should look. There’s definitely more depth and noticeably better compression here than on previous DVD offerings. For an North American audience it may not be as convincing as on this side of the pond we're less likely to be familiar with some of the faces involved, but Ghostwatch still makes it very easy to suspend your disbelief for ninety-minutes. Watch this one with the volume up at a decent level and the lights completely off for maximum effect.

It’s the moment that the crew, those making the show, finally get a glimpse of what we have seen. There is danger here. And we all now know Foxhill Drive is a house of horrors. With the passing of Parky, today, after a brilliant innings of 88, the first thing I fondly associate with him, despite all of the millions of great interviews with celebrities is his "starring role" is this magnificent innovative cult classic supernatural horror film. The grandfather of "found footage" film genre and frankly, still my favourite by far.

As kids stayed up late to watch the action with familiar, friendly faces, it was all fun and games – and a bit of tedious tech talk to set the realism scene – until the ghosts appeared. And then the public weren’t sure what they were watching. Sure, what some thought of as unnatural acting, rather than an actual petrified family and neighbourhood, alerted some sceptical viewers to believe this was a drama broadcast as part of the BBC’s Screen One anthology series. Included in this limited edition are a 30th anniversary documentary and a new booklet. You can see the full list of extras below. However, with publicity such as a Radio Times article that the cast conducted as though they were about to conduct a real investigation, and those trusted celebrities – who had played the investigation for jovial laughs before the tone terrifyingly shifted mid-show – appeared to truly fear for their lives as strange things rumbled in the Northolt night, millions wondered if a real life haunting was going on. Hundreds of thousands of calls were made to complain or enquire following the broadcast, and school playgrounds the next day were filled with pupils wondering if Parky really had been possessed and if the beloved Sarah Greene really had been captured by a malevolent spirit in the cupboard under the stairs. Ghostwatch. What could be considered the best practical joke the BBC ever made on the Great British public. And, much like all ambitious practical jokes, faced unconsidered consequences. A live report on Halloween from what we were told was a haunted semi-detached home, with some of the nation’s most respected faces. There’s children’s TV’s Sarah Greene, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; her husband, Mike Green manning the phones; Red Dwarf funny man Craig Charles taking a side-eyed cheeky glance at the whole spectacle as roving reporter; and national treasure Michael Parkinson – Parky! – the grandfather of the talk show. Surely he’d be there to hold our collective hand if things get spooky? Right, Michael? Right? While never troubling the likes of Freddy or Jason as horror icons, “Pipes” become an iconic ghostly figure in the UK after the screening of Ghostwatch, as it seemed most everyone was talking about it for a long time afterwards. People still split between whether what they had witnessed was real or not, which is testament to the hard work and planning that went into putting everything together in as convincing way as possible.

Michael Parkinson, an actual BBC newsman, is the host of the show and he interacts with some call-ins and the aforementioned paranormal researcher who explains the details behind the haunting. The reporters sent on the scene are Craig Charles, who interviews some of the people in the neighborhood, and Sarah Greene, who goes inside the house with the family and experiences the activity first hand.

Events start procedural enough, Manning and team going to dedicated lengths to cheat the authenticity of the story. As Ghostwatch unfolds and the ghostly happenings begin to occur, and increase in frequency, there is a shift in the atmosphere. It’s a small shift initially, but builds so much that even the most disbelieving in the audience will begin to waver. Ghostwatch also possesses some strange sorcery that seems to draw weird noises into the viewer’s home. My own personal recent rewatch included an early nocturnal visit from the local fox. A plot aspect of Ghostwatch, pitches itself as affecting the nation watching at home, and so this occurrence got the heart beating faster than normal. This cookie, set by YouTube, registers a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen.I don't have the limited edition...I wish I did! But I have the normal Blu Ray with the latest documentary (which is excellent). The doc features most of the cast and crew reflections (except for Mike Smith of course who passed relatively young age) but the only regret is Parky is not included which is real shame because he was the star, and despite having no acting experience, he was brilliant because, he simply played himself as if he is doing an actual Ghostwatch show. But playing yourself, is not an easy thing to do! The director cleverly, gave Parky room and flexibility to do his thing with just basic guidelines. And boy, did he deliver, giving a performance of skepticism and good ol' Parky mannerisms that we all grew up with. He was brilliant. So was Sarah Greene, who gave, imho, the most outstanding performance out of all of them, including the experienced actors, but turns out she actually did drama school when she was younger so that explains her excellence.
