Air Fryer & Grill Combo: A versatile air grill with 8 cooking functions: air fry, roast, broil, bake, steak, fries and preheat. It does so much more than just grill and completely replaces electric grill, air fryer and even oven. The grill feature is something we really think ‘sells’ the air fryer. The food cooked on the grill was tender, succulent and easily as good as outdoor BBQ food if not better! The inner bowl, crisper basket and grill plate all remove from the air fryer, so are super easy to wash in hot soapy water in the kitchen sink. Thankfully you can adjust the cooking time and the temperature while the food is cooking. I would however like the option to skip the preheating, as certain recipes do not require it. It was quite a big, bulky machine to heave out of the box and, just by itself, took up half the depth of my standard-sized worktop. It was far larger than any of my other small appliances, and more akin to the footprint of a small microwave. Its height when closed would probably allow it to be stored below wall units – but only just, and definitely not when in use. Its accessories are a cooking pot, which must always be used, plus a grill plate with handles and wire air frying basket that fits inside the pot. Rather than shaking a drawer to toss the chips, as you would in a conventional air fryer, here it’s necessary to lift the basket out to shake while wearing oven gloves, meaning that it’s more involved. I found this quite awkward, especially as the handles on the wire basket aren't very big and so difficult to grip while wearing gloves. Grilling food using your oven can deliver mixed results, as anyone who’s ever burnt meat or veggies while using one can attest to. The Chefree is definitely a multi-cooker and not (just) an air fryer. If you only use an air fryer to make the occasional plate of chips then you should opt for a smaller model with fewer functions.If you have limited space but still love cooking, grilling and baking then the Chefree can replace your oven and grill. Once you select a setting, the Chefree takes a few minutes to come to temperature before beeping to let you know to add the food. The cooking countdown only starts when the lid is closed. This is a versatile cooking appliance that takes a little bit of getting used to until you can realise its full potential.Of course, you don’t buy a huge air fryer to make cheese on toast, so let’s talk about more involved meals. For a family of four, the Chefree is a great option. It can replace the oven and works fantastically well as an indoor grill. It also includes the ability to air fry – suitable for those who aren’t sure how often they’ll make chips and other air-fried goodies, but would like the option from time to time. The curly fries were done in 12 minutes at just 170℃, while the turkey drummers came out perfectly golden in little over 16 minutes at 180℃ – a process made much easier by the aforementioned Sync Finish feature.
There is a Chefree App featuring over 100 recipes "by our chef" (the company says), organised into useful categories, e.g. 'Breakfast Food' and a '21-day Food Plan'. There's a traditonal Recipe Book format, where you can search/define by keyword (e.g. Simple, Western, French, Japanese, Difficulty etc) and also save your own recipes. The post-pandemic parallel stresses of a cost-of-living crisis compounded by soaring energy bills has been a positive boon for the air fryer industry. People have still got to eat, so the idea of being able to prepare hot meals in half the time has proved a deliciously attractive proposition. As mentioned previously, the Air Fryer Grill is big, meaning that you’ll either need sufficient counter space for it, or a decent amount of cupboard space to store it. One annoyance is that only the grill plate or the air frying basket will fit inside, so you’ll need to find a home for one of them by itself. The hope would be that you use this machine so often it earns its place permanently on your worktop, in which case you may not notice how much of a space hog it is. How does it rate online? Grill Plate: this heavy-duty grill grate turns the Chefree into an indoor grill. A huge plus if you love grilling but have no outside space, or rainy days to contend with!Being an air fryer enthusiast, I welcomed the opportunity to review this Air Fryer & Grill Combo. Still, if your kitchen countertops are big enough, it’s doable – and there’s a good reason why it’s so large. The performance of the AFW01 Air Fryer was good overall but there are some areas that could use improvement. For example, as there are no recipes, or guidance for cooking different types of food, I was unsure what programme to use for frozen food, although as 200°C was the highest temperature available, this seemed like the best option.
