In 1946 Pierrepoint and his wife took over a pub in Hollinwood, near Oldham, ironically named (not by him) the Help the Poor Struggler. Jokes that he had a sign in the bar reading 'No hanging around' distressed and annoyed him. He never talked about what he did and it was only after their marriage that he confessed it to his wife; she said she had known all along and he later praised her for never asking questions. In 1950 Timothy John Evans, a Welshman, was convicted of killing his wife and daughter at their Notting Hill home. Evans had blamed his downstairs neighbour John Christie.

It is fascinating as social history- not only in terms of crime and punishment but also in the morals and perceptions of the past - Pierrepoint is very squeamish about discussing the details of his role in front of women for example. Kramer appeared utterly indifferent to the suffering in the camp as he escorted British officers on a tour. An estimated 13,000 corpses lay unburied. In a 1976 interview with BBC Radio Merseyside, Pierrepoint expressed his uncertainty towards the sentiments, and said that when the autobiography was originally written, "there was not a lot of crime. Not like there is today. I am now honestly on a balance and I don't know which way to think because it changes every day." [79] Pierrepoint's position as an opponent of capital punishment was questioned by his long-time former assistant, Syd Dernley, in his 1989 autobiography, The Hangman's Tale:

A Very English Hangman: The Life and Times of Albert Pierrepoint

As I polished the glasses, I thought if any man had a deterrent to murder poised before him, it was this troubadour whom I called Tish, coming to terms with his obsessions in the singing room of Help The Poor Struggler. He was not only aware of the rope, he had the man who handled it beside him, singing a duet.... The deterrent did not work. He killed the thing he loved. [59] Did Covid cause a dementia timebomb? Pierrepoint was commissioned to execute several German spies and American soldiers who had faced court martial during the Second World War but his role became more vital after the war ended.
