About this deal

I thought it didn’t work, I set the time gave it a few shakes and to my amazement it works perfectly!

Naturally, after doing some research, I discovered what a mechanical watch was, and wanted to get him one. This particular version is the 7S26C. It only differs from the 1st generation 7S26A in two details: the shape of the rotor has been changed (in the 7S26B), and the previous regulator has been replaced with the slightly more potent Etachron. On paper, it’s nothing special. Not exactly pretty, but not bad. In my experience Swiss watches are like German cars expensive to buy, expensive to maintain and no where near as reliable as Japanese cars, especially Toyotas and Suzukis. Seiko 5s typically use the entry-level 7S26 or slightly upgraded 4R36 movement. Both movements are made in-house by Seiko, a rarity in affordable watchmaking.

The brushed case lugs contrast with the high-polished bezel, and all-silver dial, pairing with the beautiful (although quite uncomfortably hair-pulling) mixed-metal bracelet. The brilliant and rich sunburst grey dial looks really dynamic and with the all polished stainless steel case, the look really comes together to create the appearance almost of that of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual homage, but with enough unique design elements to stand on its own in terms of originality. Because of its extremely simple and clean white dial, the SNKL41 is a blank slate. This watch will look absolutely perfect on any strap and is the perfect watch to dress up with a dressy exotic leather strap or dress down with a bright and fun-colored NATO. It has a domed crystal and a case that’s scratched up, and has so much character, in my opinion. What is a Seiko 5?

The amount of jewels in a Seiko 5 varies depending on the movement used. Watches with the 7S26 movement have 21 jewels, and those with the 4R34 and 4R36 have 24 jewels. Some older, vintage Seiko 5s that use discontinued movements have 17 jewels. What About Vintage Seiko 5s?I think the brushing on the bracelet kind of looks out of place – like it doesn’t belong on this watch. Especially since there are absolutely no brushed surfaces on the case to tie the look together. My story of owning this SNXS79 is a funny one. Like I said earlier, it was my own personal first mechanical watch I’ve owned for myself.

One of the first mechanical watches I ever bought for myself, the SNXS79, has an extremely luxurious and rich-looking sunburst anthracite dial. The bit of extra height does help to add a touch of extra wrist presence, though not by much. 7S26 MovementThe case has a combination of both brushed and polished finishes that are done impeccably well—almost a little too well for the price. The flat brushed surfaces are offset by curved polished areas, which allow the watch to catch light in a way that resembles a luxury watch much more than other watches of this caliber. You could also wear a 20mm NATO, Perlon, or Leather strap, as long as you still use 19mm spring bars. It’ll be a bit of a snug fit, but it’ll encompass the entire length of the spring bar, and nobody will ever notice that 1mm difference. SNXS79 Dimensions and Comfort If you’re somebody who wants to swim with your watch, get a Seiko 5 Sports instead of a regular Seiko 5. The Seiko 5 Sports often have 100 meters of water resistance which is enough to safely swim with, while older models usually have around 30 meters, which is not enough. Movement I’ve left the best for last. The SNXS79 is all about the dial. When it comes to watches in this price range, Seiko simply offers the best quality. And as far as the 5s go, the way I see it, the SNXS79 dial is the One Dial To Rule Them All. I’d describe the color as a grey sunburst. In different lighting, it changes tone from a warm slate to a graphite/anthracite tone. In that manner, combined with the baton hands, it reminds me of the “MACV-SOG” 6619-8060. As far as I know, you can get cotter pin, solid link bracelets to fit many 5s on AliExpress. Some of them can be used with the original end links. Some will need a little filing down here and there on their end links.

I’d not quite go as far to say it’s an Oyster Perpetual homage. Just that it takes some really well-designed aspects from the watch. There are watches, which cost an arm and a leg and offer nothing. They just are, that’s that. There are also watches, which provide the right finishing and specs for the money. And then there are watches, which cost little but offer a ton of the good thing.

Seiko 5 SNXS79K1

It has dauphine hands and a surprising red second hand that adds a pop of color and sportiness, breaking the watch out of the mold of all o the other plain and simple dress watches on the market. The included bracelet isn’t the best, but with a watch so affordable, it’s easy to overlook, and this watch looks good on a variety of different straps if you can work around the odd 19mm lug width. One of the main things that can affect how a watch looks is the dial. Not only do you have to choose a dial color and layout that suits you, but also one with the right finish. Sunburst watch dials can be a bit flashy, as they vary greatly in different lighting conditions, while glossy or matte dials usually look rather neutral. They’re mostly unique designs made by Seiko, a very well-regarded company in the watch world, and while these watches aren’t top-of-the-line (for the price, you can’t expect them to be) they’ve become a bit of an icon in their own right. What I didn’t realize at the time was that a smaller watch is actually classier and more versatile, as it’s more subtle and discreet.
