About this deal

It has relatively fast and reliable autofocus, also on the older bodies, and it is lightweight and relatively cheap.

I already wrote a comprehensive guide on how to choose a macro lens, so I won’t go over everything here. However, here are a few key things to keep in mind: The transition from focus to out of focus areas is just gorgeous. Nice and fluid. It looks great when doing portraits. And speaking of portraits, if you’re worried that you won’t get a narrow DOF when shooting this lens, just remember that you can get much much closer to your subject, so when doing a headshot you can easily blur everything but the eyes and nose. I really found this lens great for doing portraits. They say that the proof is in the pudding and the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 creates amazing pudding…I mean images. Great, now I am hungry! We can see that there are fairly significant amounts of both distortion (pincushion style) and vignette. The heavier distortion is somewhat of a surprise on a macro lens, as they tend to be well corrected. I used a -8 to correct the pincushion distortion. The vignette was also surprisingly heavy, requiring me to max out the sliders (+100 and midpoint to zero) to give a fully corrected result. As noted, the correction profile takes care of things in the real world, but that level of correction will have somewhat of an impact on corner performance particularly at higher ISO values where noise is more obvious. Serious macro shooting is often done with manual focus. Manual focus works well, with very fine control, perfect for getting the exact focus with a magnified image.

The build quality of the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 lens is exceptional and it also comes with the added benefits of optical stabilization and weather protection. The lens is composed of 16 lenses arranged in 12 groups, which includes an aspherical lens, 3 ED glass lenses, and 1 Super ED glass lens. Additionally, the front lens is coated with fluorine. The minimum focusing distance for this lens is 25 cm. Is the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 Macro a good general telephoto lens? Absolutely, and if you are a dedicated macro shooter it is the only serious option in the Fujifilm lineup. There is something thrilling about owning a Zeiss lens. The logo itself is a moniker of high quality.

Going from memory, autofocus speed is faster with the XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR and I like the character and rendering when shooting this lens wide open at f/2. For travel, it is more compact and the same goes if you plan to use it as a walk-around daily-carry telephoto lens. Manual focus means you need to stabilize the camera as much as possible but gives you complete control of your subject. The lens itself is built as a 16 element in 12 groups construction. Within this load of elements there are 3 Low dispersion elements, one “super low dispersion” element (It has something to do with minimising aberrations, but why it’s “super” I don’t know 😛 ), one aspherical element and a floating focus system. Sometimes you just experience something that exceeds all your expectations in every possible aspect. The new Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM WR OIS Macro is exactly one of those experiences. I still can’t believe just how good and versatile this lens is. This is so much more than just a lens for shooting macro. X-T2 – XF80mm f/2.8 However, macro photography is a niche field and not many people decide to fully explore it. It is a specialized area of photography that involves a lot of experimentation and patience, and it also requires a good environment. Despite the X-mount being around since 2011, there are only three Fujifilm macro lenses available as of writing this article. This includes the brand new Fujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM W Macro which was just released in January 2023.

Full disclosure: Fujifilm USA loaned me the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR lens, with no expectations of producing a review or opportunity to review this content before publication. Physical Characteristics This is due to my laziness, but I wish the front filter threads were 72mm. I hate having to use step-down rings, or buying specific filters for individual lenses.I would even suggest a remote shutter release, as any kind of shaking to the camera will cause this lens to blur. I recommend this lens to macro enthusiasts and portrait photographers because it lends an interesting angle to portrait photography and can even be turned into a great telephoto lens with the converter. XF30/2.8 - Fuji's newest model. IF, AF, small, light and sealed. The LM AF is very fast and silent. Focuses to 1:1, but features very, very short working distances - making it too easy to shadow the subject and insufficient to be good at living moving critters at 1:1. Impractical with extension tubes. Very flare resistant and very low CAs. Makes a nice standard lens with some closer focusing capability. Regardless, with a little patience and some trial and error, I was able to capture bees landing on flowers that were swaying gently in the wind and still obtain sharp focus.
