The PCC is a body corporate, which means that it is a separate body from the people who serve on it. PCC members are also trustees, which entails various responsibilities under charity law. With reference to lay members of the Deanery, Diocesan or General Synod who are on the electoral roll of the parish. These persons are also members of the PCC in an ex-officio capacity (i.e. by virtue of their other office). The rules allow a person to have their name on more than one electoral roll. If this is the case, then that person must choose one PCC of which to be member. I didn’t detect any ‘horror’ in The Elected Member though Bernice Rubens certainly reveals the secrets behind the curtains of a seemingly respectable Jewish family and the misery they endure when they see their beloved son/brother suffer the effects of drug addiction. But ‘horror’ would be over-stating it. I’ve just finished reading The Elected Member by Bernice Rubens; the second winner of the Booker Prize.

This was an interesting story about a man struggling with mental issues and his family, a Jewish family not quite integrated into American culture. The father speaks with a Yoda-like speech pattern and feels guilty about everything, and there are a lot of conflicts between tradition and trying to make people happy. The Elected Member is a short and powerful novel. The reader is taken through the depressing and exasperating experience of a Drug addict and his close family members. For an outsider, the behavior of the drug addict and his family may appear as ridiculous, but the author has presented the situation so masterfully, that the reader feels how normal their behavior is once you are in their shoes. Revealing the past incidents which contributed to the situation from time to time, the whole story is nicely fabricated. The book leads us to think how much of a person is really him and how much of him is the person chosen for him by others. In closely knit families and societies, a great deal is chosen for you, and under various circumstances, others have elected you to be you. Churchwardens become members of the PCC as soon as they are elected at the Annual Meeting, rather than having to wait until the date that they are instituted. I think it was an inspired decision by the author to make Norman's mental breakdown / illness the result of amphetamine addiction. Although we have sympathy for Norman as he experiences the horrors his mind produces, we have even more sympathy for his family who have to deal with the effects (although not for the dead mother, who does not seem to have been a positive influence). To liaise with executive members, other council members, council officers and partner organisations to ensure that the needs of the local communities are identified, understood and supported Norman's father, his sisters Bella and Esther all have had havoc thrust upon them due to Norman and their long dead mother. The choices they made are not always honourable or in the best interests of the family but themselves and continuing to live together as a unit but operating singularly is untenable . To live with these choices is what produces guilt, regret and yes madness. Taking accountability is not a strength for anyone and avoidance appears to be a constant goal and ties them together. McEwan, always a diffident figure, has written that he was consumed by shyness at school. 'I never acted in plays. I never spoke in class and I rarely spoke up in a group of boys.' Left-ish, hippyish, and now with the outsider's awareness of class distinction, he went on to read English at Sussex university, and then enrolled in an MA 'creative writing' course at the University of East Anglia. McEwan's tutors, Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson, curators of post-war English fiction, found their student came to them with a unique, macabre imaginative world. 'Angus and Malcolm didn't bat an eyelid,' McEwan has remarked. 'They just said, "Jolly good. When can we see the next one?"'As someone who has lived with a family member who spent chunks of time in a mental home, I was moved by the insight that the author shows into the isolated frustration of the drug-addicted son wondering why other people can’t see what he can see, and don’t believe him; the family unable to ask for help from the community and unable to help their son get better; and the reality of the mental home and the inmates themselves. This reality was my reality, and the fact that it was derived in such a matter of fact way gave it great currency. The Church Representation Rules state as follows: The standing committee shall have power to transact the business of the Council between PCC meetings, subject to any directions given by the Council. In the late 1980s, some commentators spoke explicitly of the English literary tradition resting on the achievements of Amis, McEwan, Barnes and Rushdie. I read The Elected Member – the winner of the Booker Prize in 1970 – as part of my Booker Prize Project in which I set out to read all the winners since the prize was initiated in 1969. Their early work put both Amis and McEwan at the top of many critics' lists of most promising newcomers. Approaching middle age, they were no longer alone. At the beginning of the 1980s, they were surrounded by a new generation, an explosion of literary talent heralded by the sensational appearance of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, which won the Booker prize in 1981. Now there were not only three big names for the literary press to write about. Amis, Rushdie and McEwan were accompanied by a flotilla of newcomers, symbolised by Granta's Best of Young British top 20, which included William Boyd, Kazuo Ishiguro, Graham Swift - and Julian Barnes.

For several years after 1989, Salman Rushdie was one English-language novelist everyone had heard of. McEwan's temporary eclipse by events was matched, in his private life, by a catastrophic marital breakdown. This long agony took its toll. From 1993 to 1997 McEwan published nothing new. After his divorce, he met Annalena McAfee, an arts journalist from the Financial Times, and fell in love. Once they were married and the custody battle over his sons settled, McEwan entered a season of new happiness. Moray has 8 wards, each represented by 3 or 4 elected members. I worked as a journalist for nine years then in international corporate communicationsNevertheless, the story of Norman’s committal is not that simple. True, his pills make him hallucinate. He believes his room is overrun by silverfish and that their droppings are everywhere. But the real question in the novel is what has driven Norman along this self-destructive path. Rubens handles this matter with insight and empathy. The novel’s epigraph – If patients are disturbed their families are often very disturbing. – is a clue that Norman’s problem possibly lies with his family and his upbringing, rather than merely being the product of an aberrant will, which is a thought that occurs to his father early on. Rubens explores the various key milestones in the family history which may or may not have contributed to Norman’s problem through the perspectives of the different family members. Norman’s career as a brilliant barrister is over as a result of his addiction. But is that addiction linked to his overbearing mother who drove him in his education from an early age and refused to allow him adult freedom? Does it lie with his relationship with his sister, Bella, similarly oppressed by her parents, or with Esther, his youngest sister, now estranged from the family for two decades after she married a non-Jewish man? Did Esther’s confidence in Norman concerning her marriage and her decision to leave her former fiancé, a close friend of Norman’s, affect Norman’s mental health? Is Norman responsible for the dark path he has taken, or are we to believe the conclusion that he has become the family scapegoat? In 2004 a rule was brought in setting down numbers to be elected to the PCC which were dependent on the size of the parish’s electoral roll.(Up to 50: 6, 51-100: 9, 101-200: 12, over 200: 15). However the parish can set a different number, by resolution passed at the APCM, which would take effect the following year. According to Rubens' obituary in the Daily Telegraph, she once wrote that: "The acid test of a good piece of writing, even if it is of violence and cruelty, is that it must make one's ears water." I don't know if the "ears" reference is a typographical error, or Rubens really did expect quality writing to induce this bizarre effect, but her intended meaning is clear enough. On her own terms then, The Elected Member is a success. It's hard reading, but all the more resonant for that. Like Something To Answer For before it, this book makes more recent Booker winners appear comparatively timid and conservative choices. As we advance in the narrative, we find more about the conflicts, traumas and breakdowns in the family, with what really happened when Esther left the household to marry the goyim John…she had had a connection with a Jewish boy, David, when all over the sudden, one rainy night, as she was absent, Bella goes to Edith’s room where a letter is on the bed…as they read it, they find that the girl had married John, the only non-Jewish friend they had, about a month ago…in reality, they had not married and the author of the letter was…Norman

Norman is the clever one of a close-knit Jewish family in the East End of London. Infant prodigy; brilliant barrister; the apple of his parents' eyes... until at forty-one he becomes a drug addict, confined to his bedroom, at the mercy of his hallucinations and paranoia. The councillors are champions of their local communities and seek to balance often competing interests to achieve an outcome satisfactory to the majority. AllowancesAmsterdam won the Booker prize, sold more than quarter of a million copies, and did especially well in America. The Booker prize should have been a climax to a lifetime of achievement. In fact, it was the warm-up for a much bigger performance: Atonement, the story of a child whose inventions play havoc with people's lives. For many, Atonement is his finest work: a mature piece of storytelling which also examines knotty questions of class, memory and identity. It was also, he told The Observer, about 'a reconciliation with self'. To participate in informed and balanced decision making on committees and panels to which they might be appointed The story tells of a fragmented Jewish family trying to retain their sense of kinship in a secular world. Focusing particularly on a Jewish Rabbi and his drug-addicted wunderkind son, the author has used the incarceration of the son in a mental hospital as an avenue to play with chronology, fantasy, psychosis, religion, conservatism, and the mundanity of family life. And then occasionally she throws in a startling anecdote in the same simple direct prose, leaving the reader reeling. I had many ‘did I just read that??’ moments.
