In historic Edinburgh, developers are preparing to turn a Victorian Gothic building into luxury flats. They're not expecting the skeletal remains found within. The plot starts with Gordon visiting her old boarding school to write about the grand fund-raising event. With a list of suspects with the needle of suspicion pointing to almost everyone, can P.I. Kate Brannigan find the murderer or allow the culprit to take another life? The plot is fun and fast-paced, with great dialogues, brilliant world-building, and great characters. Karen Pirie is the main character in Inspector Karen Pirie series by Scotland author of crime, thriller and mystery books Val McDermid. McDermid is also the author of three other book series including Lindsay Gordon, Kate Brannigan, and Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series. She has won several awards including the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year award and CWA Gold Dagger Award. Nearly 25 years on, DS Karen Pirie is determined to uncover what happened that fateful night. Do the men know more than they previously revealed? When Karen uncovers flaws in the initial investigation, she finds herself in conflict with the very officers who led the original hunt for the killer. The first series began on ITV on 25 September 2022 and concluded on 9 October 2022. A second series has been commissioned… ITV commissions cold case murder drama, Karen Pirie, (w/t) based on Val McDermid’s The Distant Echo.My first published work, this was adapted from my first attempt at a novel. I wrote the novel when I was about twenty, so of course it was full of all the things that 20-year-olds know about — love, hate, angst, the meaning of life and, naturally, a suicide attempt in the penultimate chapter. Many people might not like the character of Gordon in this book. She comes off as too abrasive, rude, obstinate, and arrogant. But this is what the character starts with, and it changes as the story progresses in the other books. Karen Pirie is just one of crime writer Val McDermid’s iconic characters, with Tony Hill/Carol Jordan, Kate Brannigan, and Lindsay Gordon. The book has been adapted for screen by writer and actress Emer Kenny, who also stars in the show alongside Lauren Lyle. Speaking to BT, Kenny said “I am so grateful to Val McDermid for lending me her brilliant characters, and beyond excited to work with the actors and Gareth Bryn to bring them to the screen”. When a lobster fisherman finds a dead body in the Firth of Forth, DCI Karen Pirie is drawn into a case involving a disappearance, art crimes, and secret identities. At the heart of it lies a talented mimic who seems capable of convincingly copying any painter.

The kidnappers demand a huge ransom for the lives of the lady and her son. However, the delivery of the ransom money goes horribly wrong and Heiress Catriona Maclennan gets killed while running away from the kidnappers and her son goes missing without any trace. After that, the plot of the novel shifts to the time of the year 2008 in Tuscany, when a jogger gets stumbled upon an evidence related to the kidnapping case of Catriona Maclennan. The headmistress asks Gordon to investigate the case and get to the bottom of it. It is where the murder investigation starts, and things get exciting.
