That straight-from-the-barrel strength will be around 62% – it’s released in limited run batches so the strength will vary according to exactly which cask it came from. Be brave and have a little sip neat, then add water until it reaches your preferred taste. Invest in a bottle, take a few sips, and slowly explore its flavour and you’ll also discover there’s more to it than those naysayers will admit. It has a clean, grassy taste that hints at the barley from which its made, while subtle oaky, vanilla spices show off its cask conditioning. Decent balance, medium body and a slightly oily texture with almost no burn that makes it almost too easy to drink. Gaelic for ‘Golden Salmon’, Bradan Orach is the classic, welcoming Speyside whisky, matured exclusively in American Oak ex-bourbon casks. Named in honour of the world-class salmon fishing found along the River Spey, this single malt was originally introduced for the American market in 2009. It is bright, vibrant, subtly sweet and naturally refreshing. The label is green with some metallic accents, which gives it a regal air. Overall, the design is simple and understated, which is personally my style. I also appreciate that the label is efficient with its use of space, being just enough of a billboard to telegraph exactly what’s in the bottle without obscuring the beautiful contents. Neat The finish is what kills it for me though: there’s a distinct bitterness that develops, and lasts well after the spirit has disappeared. Nose: When first putting my nose to the glass, I was hit with a rush of what seemed like spring in whisky form: bright, acidic, and tart, dominated by lemon and oak with an undercurrent of floral notes. After a few seconds that acidity mellowed a bit, giving way to an earthier honey aroma with touches of lavender, cardamom, and coffee. All Speyburn single malt is matured in air-dried oak casks seasoned with bourbon or sherry, to help the spirit fully develop its natural qualities. Unfortunately, those flavors don’t really translate into the taste of the whiskey. Instead of those fruity notes, the majority of the flavors seem to come out of those previously used bourbon barrels. There’s a small glimmer of floral sweetness at first, but then a groundswell of caramel and vanilla start to take over.
