About this deal

If your child is diagnosed with glue ear and their hearing is affected, the audiology or ENT department at the hospital will monitor the glue ear over a period of three months. This is known as ‘watchful waiting’. At the end of this period, your child’s hearing will be retested to see if the glue ear has resolved. There is no evidence that cranial osteopathy, a type of alternative therapy that involves applying gentle pressure to the head, can cure or relieve the symptoms of glue ear. It is not recommended by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). If your child has glue ear, undergoes cranial osteopathy and then feels better, it isn’t the treatment that helped but rather that their glue ear got better on its own. Myth three finding it hard to concentrate or seeming tired and irritable because it's harder for them to listen Recent research has found that children who use the nasal balloon were 40% more likely to have their ears cleared of fluid after 1 month compared to children who had watchful waiting alone. This treatment could potentially reduce the number of surgical interventions required as a higher proportion of children will have restored hearing within three months.

Four randomised controlled trials involving a total of 565 children showed statistically significant improvements in middle ear function with Otovent compared with standard care, as determined by tympanometry and pneumatic otometry. The comparator was not always fully described. This is not usually a main symptom but mild earache may occur from time to time. Children and babies may pull at their ears if they have mild pain. Adults and children aged 3 years and up. The treatment of children should always be supervised by an adult. How often and how long should I use Otovent? Your child’s specialist may perform a surgery called myringotomy. During this procedure, the specialist will make a small cut in your child’s eardrum to allow fluid to drain from their middle ear. The specialist may place a tiny, hollow ear tube in the cut. The tube helps balance the pressure in their eardrum with the pressure in their middle ear. It also provides drainage from your child’s middle ear to their outer ear. The tube usually falls out on its own within a year. Adenoidectomy

Who is at risk of glue ear?

The Ear Popper® is a more expensive device that is battery operated. It is inserted into one of your nostrils and shoots tiny jets of air into your nose to get more air into your Eustachian tube. However, the gluey fluid is a good food for germs (bacteria) and ear infections are more common in children with glue ear. This may then cause bad earache for the duration of an infection. Always have a painkiller such as paracetamol in your home in case earache develops. To determine the severity of your condition, the doctor will examine your ear using a magnified scope with an attached light. This will also help them determine the exact spot of the fluid build-up.You can also try over-the-counter nasal sprays that contain steroids. These can also be prescribed by your GP.
