About this deal

Encourage your child to find the words that rhyme in the story. You can explain to them that you are looking for words that sound the same at the end, but remind them that these words might not be spelt the same. Revell agreed, saying there are a range of fantastic books out there that parents can add to their kids' libraries. When your child is consistently able to recognise the rhyming words in the story you can then encourage him or her to come up with their own words. You can say “Can you think of another word that rhymes with Potts and spots?”. Children will love looking at the detailed illustrations of each dog, and it's a great conversation starter around different words to describe how each dog looks and might feel" - The Evening Standard

Hairy Maclary books are designed to be read by an adult to a child. The plots are simple, keeping with the comprehension-level of the age group for which they are written. They generally involve Hairy and his friends in adventurous scenarios pitched against local cats. The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives, their actions tell the stories, and reflect their animal natures. Miklavčič, Alja, Jana Kolarič (in Slovenian), Društvo slovenskih pisateljev , retrieved 16 August 2017It does seem crazy that anyone would have an issue with Hairy Maclary, it's a lovely rhyming book that kids get a lot of enjoyment out of." The points are really valid," she said. "My view on that, though, is let's not just dive into some of those wonderful books, let's just leave them as is but go forward with some real thinking around inclusivity." And I have found that… the animal characters always seem to be blokes so I just change the name or I change the pronoun or I ask - we were talking about Donaldson's dairy - and I asked, 'Who owns Donaldson's Dairy? Is it Mr Donaldson or is it Mrs Donaldson?" Could what the dogs were feeling as they ran away been something other than fear, such as surprise? Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is a fabulous book full of rhyme, repetition and rhythm – and funny animals! The book tells the story of scruffy dog Hairy Maclary meeting up with different dog friends who are all out for a walk. The dogs are all fantastically described, being all different shapes and sizes and are given fun, imaginative names. Each dog is happy to be outside, sniffing the air and snooping at every door, when suddenly they encounter Scarface Claw, the toughest Tom in town. This causes all of the dogs to run home in a scatter, a wail and a howl.

Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my BEDTIME STORIES list.Schnitzel von Krumm is the star of several of his own adventures as well as appearing in Hairy Maclary's. A red standard smooth-haired Dachshund, Schnitzel's legs are the shortest in the gang.
