Over the past few years there have been occasions where countries have wanted to celebrate and show their love for the LGBTQ+ community. Be it during LGBT History Month, or to celebrate Pride or more recently in loving support for the legalisation of same sex marriage. During these times we have seen monuments and buildings of significance illuminated in bright lights, representing the rainbow flag. Year of the emoji On 15 February, 29,040 people gathered in a stadium in Lahore to form the flag of Pakistan and set a new world record for forming the world's largest national flag comprising humans, which was certified by Guinness World Records. [14] [15]This complex and hazardous attempt required Lowri to release the flag and have it fully unfurled in a minimum of 10 seconds, all while travelling down the zip wire at breath-taking speed - 70 mph to be exact. This record is currently sparking a friendly competition in the region, with the last three records being set in the Middle East. Harvey approached his friend and fellow rights activist Gilbert Baker, with the idea of a new symbol for the LGBTQ+ community. Why Gilbert? Well he was also well known for being an artist, designer and drag performer, who made many of his own outfits. This was a light bulb moment for Gilbert as he had been exploring the possibilities of a flag representing the LGBTQ+ community for a couple of years, prior to his conversation with Harvey. When displayed or flown alongside other national flags, the National Flag must be displayed or flown at the same height as the other national flags, never lower.
