Producing at least one energy is something players should be trying to do, even in the first round. Players begin the game with ten points, but if a player doesn’t produce any energy in a round, they will lose three of those points. Players who produce at least six energy are eligible to score the end-of-round bonus tiles. Points come from each of a particular building a player has built, as an example. In addition, the player who produces the most energy each round scores six points and the second most receives two points. As a result, the gap between first and last can be drastic if one player scores a decent amount of energy and the other produces none and takes the penalty. It costs 2 Excavators multiplied by the production value of the Conduit you are building (eg. if the Conduit has a production value of 4, it will cost 8 Excavators). The map is divided into 3 areas: the Mountains, Hills, and Plains. Water starts in the 4 headstreams at the top of the If the structure you built revealed Income (!), immediately receive it (you’ll receive it again in subsequent Income

Barrage is a resource management strategic game in which players compete to build their majestic dams, raise them to increase their storing capacity, and deliver all the potential power through pressure tunnels connected to the energy turbines of their powerhouses. There are five types of Technology tiles, one for building each of the four structure pieces, and one wild Technology tile that can be used to build any of the four structures. All Technology tiles work in the same way: they stay on the Construction Wheel until they return to the entry space and are available again. End-of-round Scoring: Players earn bonuses for the Energy they produced during that specific round. Your turn ends once you have performed an action. If it's your turn and you don't have Engineers left in your supply, you must pass. The building structures are nice and chunky and each player has differently styled pieces. This is a good touch, although again, not really required. The two types of machinery are nicely molded, but are very small. This is necessary for them to fit on the production wheels, but most of my opponents disliked them (I thought they were fine). They come in three sizes, to show denominations of 1, 3, and 5 units, but the size differentials aren’t as clear as I’d prefer. Still, they’re playable. Take the first corresponding structure piece from the left of your Company Board and place it in one corresponding available building space on the Map (if you are building an Elevation, place it over one of your existing Dams).

Conduits cost 2 brown Excavators multiplied by the Energy Production Value of the Conduit (1-5). For example, a Place 1 Water Drop on a Headstream tile. The drop you have just placed flows down immediately following the water flow rules. But, for me (and, I suspect, for most players), the best part of the design is the boardplay. The key design decision in the game is that when you generate energy, you reroute the water from its normal path. So each item that the players build changes the board situation, sometimes dramatically. This makes the game very challenging and wonderfully interactive. Look, I love the indirect interaction that is the hallmark of your standard Euro as much as the next guy. But I have to say, this return to the non-destructive, but still reasonably in-your-face boardplay that was much more prevalent in the German designs of the 90’s than it is today, is both refreshing and exhilarating. It raises this title to greatness. The spaces are also grouped into seven different areas, each of which provides similar things, but with different rewards and costs. For example, there are three different pairs of spaces which let the player add more machinery tokens to their supply, with the more expensive spaces yielding more and better machines. Thus, even though there are a lot of publicly available action spaces, they are organized in easily understood groups.

tied up on their Construction Wheel) and divides the resulting sum by 5, earning that number of VP, The crux of the game’s actions are taken through worker placement. Players can gain new technology, resources, contracts, and money. They can use workers to turn their construction wheel (more on that later), add some new water to the river, and activate a powerhouse. All these are available using one to three workers (and sometimes three credits if desperate for a particular action). Players play five rounds of this, building structures that uncovering symbols that will get them more items for income and even an extra player power. A late-game look at what Barrage can look like, with many extensions added to bases. Game Experience: It is not difficult to parse by any means. It is just one of those games where early decisions are going to fuel how a lot of the game is going to progress. First plays of Barrage run between 120 and 150 minutes and plays better with more players, maxing out at four players. Gameplay Overview:
