About this deal

Sometimes the very thing that grabs a reader's attention (in terms of an author's style), is the same thing that can get a little annoying after a while - similar scenarios, use of language etc. And when that happens, sometimes it's best to just leave that particular writer alone for a while and spread your readery wings further afield. He is one of the few writers taking forward the tradition of the great supernatural storytellers -- and being innovative. (Evening Standard) This year I pirated a Kindle version of a James Herbert novel to try to relive the ghostly pleasures of yesteryear.

Creed (1990) DLS Reviews - Creed (1990)

In the first chapter of the book the invisible narrator gives the reader a low-down on Creed and has, I thought, a very pleasing voice, telling the tale in an amusing and very entertaining way. The invisible narrator keeps popping up throughout the course of the book to help move the story along and explain a few things. Herbert's final novel has an eerie political edge. Ash imagines Princess Diana and her secret son as well as Lord Lucan, Colonel Gaddafi and Robert Maxwell living together in a Scottish castle. [15] Masterton, Graham, ed. (1989). Scare Care (Tor horror). New York City: St. Martin's Press. ISBN 978-0-312-93156-8.Early in the book, I was willing to give this one a three-star rating. It wasn’t my favourite James Herbert book, but it had me curious to see what would come next. The ending, however, let me down. When the supernatural was finally explained, it was done so simply and the story came to an far too sudden end. I expected more from this one, finding myself let down by the way things concluded. The path leads to the Fallen Angels Of Europe. Alone, with little help and his (somewhat unwanted) son now kidnapped by the very people that are after him, Creed must dig up the dirt of the past to uncover what dark forces he is facing. Under the threats and the intimidation, lies an evil sect that will stop at nothing to secure their existence. Demons exist. And they have their sights set on Creed... for murder and the mutilation of children. Creed eventually discovers his antagonists are the Fallen Angels of Europe, whose origins can be traced to Biblical sources. Their powers are waning, the centuries and Still seen as a good officer, Kelso is assigned to the Drugs Squad and ends up undercover in a small Suffolk coastal town, trying to discover the source of a recent LSD poisoning of a local family. Joined in his investigation by Customs Officer Ellie, the pair soon fall foul of a sinister drug manufacturing operation and both their lives are at risk. Will Kelso's 'guardian Angela's save him yet again?.... I can imagine Delgard having his own TV season as a character. A film is being made of the book - entitled 'The Unholy' - but it is boringly being set in contemporary Massachusetts (oh dear, Salem again!) and the actor playing Delgard looks too young. But let's keep an open mind.

a b c d Holland, Steve (21 March 2013). "James Herbert obituary". Guardian.co.uk. London . Retrieved 24 March 2013. With his third novel, the ghost story The Survivor, Herbert used supernatural horror rather than the science fiction horror of his first two books. In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. Haunted, the story of a sceptical paranormal investigator taunted by malicious ghosts, began life as a screenplay [13] for the BBC, though this was not the screenplay used in the eventual film version. Its sequels were The Ghosts of Sleath and Ash. [14] Others of Herbert's books, such as Moon, Sepulchre and Portent, are structured as thrillers and include espionage and detective story elements along with the supernatural. Our main character John is simply so unlikeable to hold this book together. He's flawed, an everyman, thrown into a situation he actively tries to repel before giving in and with the help of those around him, learning to "grow" and accept what's happening to him. But his flaws never seem to go away. He's a quiet type, a recluse and I can see how the idea of having a character like this would be good but the execution here is not great. In fact, a lot of the characters we meet are just unlikable. The island in which the story takes place seems to be inhabited strictly of upper class pompous gossips who you can imagine all love whipping out the colourful language at Christmas.

Creed by James Herbert | Waterstones

The early books still retain an amazing power over me to this day, showing his skill as one of the greats of the horror fiction genre."

REVIEWS of CREED by James Herbert

When the major Hollywood actress Lily Neverless dies, Creed is of course hovering around at the funeral. Not to pay his respects to the late actress, but to snap those in attendance; hopefully capturing a sly smirk from one of the supposed mourners at the passing of the off-screen bitch. territories of evil, evoking a sense of brooding menace and rising tension. He relentlessly draws the reader through the story's ultimate revelation - one that will stay to chill the mind long after
