About this deal

Mini alpine goats are a new and rather experimental breed that has been produced for hobby farms. These goats share many of the same characteristics as their full-sized counterparts, including sweet personalities and hardy physiology. However, although these goats might produce a small amount of milk, one of the facts that new owners must recognize is that they are not appropriate for large-scale dairy operations.

American Alpines: Alpines with other genetic influences after their introduction to the United States. American Alpines have much of the visual type and temperament as French Alpines, but may have less standard markings or conformation due to crossbreeding.

Alpines dip into the lower range on butterfat, though they will produce some. However, considering the highest butterfat percentage you can find at the store is 2% most homesteaders who only want to drink the milk will find Alpines’ 3.5% more than acceptable. Just remember that goat milk is naturally homogenized so you’ll need a cream separator to make butter and other dairy fat products. Alpine goats are one of the top milk producers, alongside Saanen and Toggenburg goats. They are distinct from the other two due to their low value of fat content. [4] This could be a direct correlation between the weight of the animal and its habitual environment. However, the Nubian goat's weight is similar to that of the Alpines at maturity, yet it produces less milk, containing a higher proportion of fat, than the Alpine goats. [4] a b "Breed Standards". The American Dairy Goat Association faults all-white and Toggenburg patterned individuals. [2] History [ edit ] The peak periods for milk production occur after four to six weeks of parturition (kidding). [4] The optimal weight at which a goat produces optimal milk production is at least 130 pounds. For the Alpine goat that number is higher at 135 pounds and produces 2,134 pounds of milk per lactation. [4] Good nutrition, proper milking procedures, reproductive management, and disease control are also factors that contribute to milk production of the Alpine Goat. Alpines are friendly and easily handled by people. They can be stubborn, however, so the younger their training begins, the better. – Milk Stand Training Two Alpine goats were shown at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904 and helped spark the development of the modern breed. The average alpine goat produces around two to three quarts of milk every day. Pregnant does might produces as much as a gallon a day, but these amounts can fluctuate significantly during the gestation period. Goat's Mik". The British Medical Journal. 1 (2894): 855–856. One of the most confusing terms in registering an Alpine is knowing if she is French or American and what it means. Alpines are great mothers. They usually carry twins, but singles and triplets aren’t unusual. Alpines can even have quintuplets, though this is rare. What is fun about Alpine kids is you never know what color combinations you may get each spring! The ancestors of modern goats came from the group Aegodontia, which includes all bovids outside of the subfamily Bovinae. In general, the behavior of modern bovids varies greatly, with some being solitary and others traveling in groups.
