About this deal

I use baby oil but not in direct sunlight, mine itches tummy and used sudocreme as a barrier last yea rbut made him itch more due to its drying effect, Charlies is more like an excema, soi spray his tummy with baby oil (THIS DOESNT GET THE SUN) and add some TCP to the mix as a fly repelleant but also a antiseptic on the sore bits. Ditto post above re. patch testing first (48 hrs). Having heard it mentioned on here, I tried it on my traddie boy. He's got white hair and pink legs. Big mistake. Poor boy, he came up all red and sore. Stupidly I should have patched tested first, but I had no idea it could be so caustic. Due to all the horror stories I've heard, I was wary of trying pig oil, especially with any sulphur in...

Well I just apply mine (must get some more!) after a farriers visit. This is enough to keep MF at bay and the feather in good clean condition. i use pig oil and sulphur and i think that this deters the condition but you need the initial frontline treatment. Pig oil and sulphur sounds a rather grim mix, but it’s actually a brilliant combination of products that has been used for a long, long time as a way to help prevent mud related conditions, such as mud fever, in horses. Here’s a bit about why pig oil and sulphur work so well together, and what both elements add to a mud based product. I always worry when people on here are very keen to recommend the "pig oil & sulphur" treatment for just about everything ranging from sweet itch to mud fever to feather mites and everything else in between. I can use Pig Oil with Tea Tree oil in it if I just get a sponge and whisk it over the coat, that's OK. So would say its definately the sulphur which is the problem as its obviously very caustic and/or irritant.Touch wood, my current two never have had mites and once I treated the previous two with Frontline, then just using P&S kept them from returning again. SSS i used this on my pony it acts as a fly repellent and i is oils based.. i use it on me as an after sun.. but i do know some peeps that will use this and other oil in the sun.. you are quite literally "cooking " your skin to get a tan!! I know that the first application has to be on clean dry legs (so he's having a bath tomorrow) but how do I apply the next application in a few weeks time. Will I have to shampoo his feathers again or after the first lot can you just re-apply because they are already clean and protected? I really hope it's as good as it says, as he is soooo hard to keep clean during the winter and anything that helps will be a bonus One of mine reacted to the sulphur mixed in pig oil and it burnt his feathers off. He's fine with pig oil alone.

The sulphur is Flowers of Sulphur and the form we need for this job looks like yellow talcum powder. It has antiseptic and anti fungal properties. It is much used in gardening and other aplications it can be in pelleted or flaked form which isn't for mixing with pig oil! Please Note: These size guides are approximate and each brand's measurements and sizing criteria may vary. If you have a new horse or are just unsure which size rug your horse needs it is useful to take certain measurements of your horse. There legs have to be clean for the farrier and this is the only time I wash the legs down if they have wet mud on them and other wise just brush off any mud when it dry and just embrace the 'rustic' loo the rest of the time! I know popping it on then means it will be done regularly without me forgetting and that the legs are always clean enough to do it when planned.

Rachael is an amateur Event rider from Kent and Bailey is a 7 year old 17hh gelding, and together they go by the name of Eventful Eventing. Do you worm with Ivomec based wormer? Use it every time and it will keep on top of the mites from within. ditto always apply it without washing (i wash as little as i have too so only wash for shows)- just brush off any dirt first. Pig Oil is actually a mineral oil just the same as Baby Oil, but it's a thinner consistency and doesn't contain perfumes.
