The number and variety of designs make it so that the odd disappointment is more than made up for by some of the favourites we mentioned before. Although a lot of my amusement did admittedly come from the various Bugsnax and the way they mutter their own names to themselves, the grumpuses have their moments to shine as well. There are melancholic moments and serious subjects such as relationships, mental health, and loss broached in a delicate manner, as well as more overarching issues like climate change that are raised.

The parallels between this and Pokemon Snap are easily drawn, but from there on Bugsnax becomes its own beast. You do this multiple times over traveling to various areas such as beaches, forests, and snow-covered mountains.There may be a lot of games you want to try on the new PS5 console, but if you're looking for a palate cleanser between the bigger, flashier games, Bugsnax is the perfect aperitif to your next-gen feast. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first, and head to a title that’s missing from very few teenagers’ bedrooms. I’m going to skip the juicy story bits, but essentially, the Bugsnax don’t work, they just make it worse. This is something I’d recommend doing, though – although some side missions are a series of dull fetch quests, others result in the most spectacular encounters Bugsnax has to offer.

To reach Brokentooth, you have to rescue all the characters involved and complete all their side quests chains, including Snorpy’s. It breaks down each biome and shows you how many critters you’ve scanned, how many you captured, and the number of creatures you have yet to discover. There are brief moments where the game can reach the 60 you get on the PS5, but those are incredibly rare and I mostly saw what I think was somewhere between 25 and 40 fps, trending towards the latter and above in less dense areas. With motorbike chases, dangerous stunts, and a whole lot of mushy peel left in your wake, it’s the closest you can get to Bananas in Pajamas coming back for a slice of John Wick vengeance.

This is largely down to the excellent writing and voice performances throughout, and to the fact that each grumpus is very much their own character with their own beliefs and problems to solve. Your SnaxScope allows you to scan information about your surroundings including Bugsnax, other characters, and important objects. It’s nice to see a team take a game that was designed for the PS5 and get it to run on the Switch, and for the most part it does outside of some long load times and occasional pop-in. It’s absurdist to the extreme at times, but what do you expect from a game that’s home to a tornado-conjuring flapjack with bacon for legs?

Instead of taking place after the end of the Bugsnax, it's more of a side quest that takes place during the main narrative, not affecting the story at all.
