About this deal

Before your first game, carefully remove the various pieces from the frame. Players should sit in such a way that they both can read the cards. There is only one small issue some have with this game, that I don't necessarily agree with, but can understand; and that is the slow play and analysis paralysis that can occur during the placement of the Targi. Whether this is true or not, the matter is dealt within in the expansion, imaginatively titled, Targi The Expansion. The search for the perfect two player game seems to be very high on a lot gamers agenda. Something that that offers an engaging and thematic experience, with a significant amount of strategy and options. But without a huge set up or complexity that may turn some players off for a two player experience. This is rare to find, but the answer could have been sat in front of us for a while. The 2012 release of Targi may have been over shadowed that year by strategy classics such as Terra Mystica, Tzolk’in and Lords of Waterdeep, but I would urge you to give it a try if you are looking to add a new two player strategy game with some depth into your collection. That's easier said than done. Aside from trying to break through any barriers you've erected, they'll do their best to chow down on park guests as well. Seeing as you have other objectives you need to complete at the same time (which often feature unique mini-games), stopping them becomes a delicious Catch 22 conundrum. Mix in legacy mechanics that give you the ability to create your own unique board for use in a separate game type - not to mention freakin' dinosaurs - and you've got a satisfying experience that combines the best bits of Pandemic and Horrified.

Trader: Exchange 3x Goods (of the same type) for 1x Gold; or 2x Goods (of the same type) for 1x other Good. Gameplay: Duel cuts away the fat of its predecessor for a leaner, more streamlined alternative. Besides having a shorter run-time, there's slightly less to juggle - it's a good entry-point to the series. However, that doesn't mean it loses any of the franchise's magic. Instead, this two-player spin is able to zero in on the best bits from older versions. For example, you only have to select one of three approaches rather than being overwhelmed with options. There's an elegance to it.

Thoughts

Exception: One of the Tribe cards lets a player move 2 laid out cards; however, the player may not leave any gaps after moving his cards. With this minor quibble sorted, what you are left with is an absorbing game. There is so much to admire about Targi, and Targi The Expansion builds on all the good bits and could be one of the best expansions out there. So, in essence, what I am talking about here is one of the best expansions for one of the best games. Do you really need to read on? Waiting for the twist… How it works: Challenging you with leading an ancient society to greatness, you can achieve victory in Duel through amassing military might, scientific advancements, or points won through culture. Want to snuff out your opponent's civilization via force of arms? Go ahead. Would you prefer to lead the charge on learning and academia, meanwhile? That's no problem either. As per the original, Duel gives you ownership over its mechanics in a way few other games do. Alright, so there aren't as many options as the 'full' 7 Wonders. But you can still find enough to chew on. Image credit: Twin Drums, Cephalofair Games, Prospero Hall, Cubicle 7) What are the most popular board games for 2 players? If a Goods card shows one or two Goods, one gold, or one VP, the player takes the corresponding token(s). If the 3 kinds of Goods are separated by a stroke, the player takes one Goods of his choice.

If you haven’t played Targi yet, then I would suggest you get that first and leave this for now, but know you have something brilliant in store for you in a few months’ time. Targi is one of the best small box two-player games out there. It feels like you are playing such a "bigger" game. The choices and strategy within this tiny box are huge. The gameplay is smooth, satisfying and rewarding. You will feel absorbed throughout and the scoring mechanic is such that it is hard to guess who is going to be the winner until the final scoring. Unless someone races ahead with tribe cards, but that is very rare. As such, at all times, both players are engrossed.Fata Morgana: You may move one of your Tribe Markers (on one of the central cards) onto another vacant central card. This offers flexibility if your opponent/Robber prevented you aligning your meeples to get the central card you needed. You're expecting it to be as deep as standard Gloomhaven: This is a prequel to the original Gloomhaven (not to mention its sequel, Frosthaven) that was designed to be an accessible entry-point for newcomers. That means it's not as big or as fiendish as its predecessor.
