About this deal

The Witness is an optional role when playing with six or more players.* The Witness is an Investigator who has witnessed the culprits leaving the crime scene. They have no way of knowing which is the Murderer and which is the Accomplice and they do not know how the crime was committed. One Night Ultimate Werewolf distils the original social deduction experience of classic Werewolf (also known as Mafia) into a fast and fun 10-minute game that doesn’t need a large group. By condensing the action into just one round, the game removes the need for either a referee or player elimination, meaning no-one has to miss out on the action.

After each player has presented their opinions a second time, the Forensic Scientist moves on to the final round of Evidence Collection. Also, as the game master, the Forensic Scientist sets the tone of the game. Don’t be afraid to ham it up a bit and take some time when placing the bullet markers. That is basically all you get to do, after all. And besides, the discussion that ensues as you do so will give you guidance as to the thinking of the group and might perhaps help you to push them in the right direction. She’s also not a fan of bluffing games. Games that involve any type of deceit don’t go over well in her book. Yet for a game called “Deception” there isn’t any lying involved. The person who is the murderer isn’t telling people that he’s not the murderer. Instead, he’s simply suggesting cards in front of the other players that may incriminate them. The possible combos are always so varied.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a board game for 4 to 12 players designed by Tobey Ho and published by Grey Fox games in 2015. [1] [2] Set as a detective investigation scene, in Deception players find themselves in a scenario of intrigue and murder, deduction and deception. [3] [4] Players take on the roles of investigators attempting to solve a murder case, but one of the investigators is actually the killer. Different roles are randomly assigned at the start of play. As the investigators attempt to deduce the truth, the murderer's team must deceive and mislead. [5] After the final marker has been placed, the Forensic Scientist should allow a brief period for discussion of the evidence and then ask each player to present their opinions about the crime. The game ends after the third round of the investigation phase whether the murderer has been caught. The following are the options of what will happen at the end of the game. Closing the FileDeception: Murder in Hong Kong, players find themselves in a scenario of intrigue and murder, deduction and deception. One player is the Murderer, secretly choosing their weapon and the evidence they leave behind. Another is the Forensic Scientist who holds the key to convicting the criminal but is only able to express their knowledge through analysis of the scene. The rest are investigators, interpreting the clues to solve the crime – and the killer is among them. That’s right, there’s a whole lot of cards in the box, and they’re all nicely designed. The tiles and tokens look really good, too, and are all made of really strong stuff, so they will easily be able to last many a high-energy game. The wooden bullet markers are a nice touch, as well. After the placement of the first marker, all players but the Forensic Scientist can freely discuss and express their opinions about the investigation.

Witness (1): The witness wins if they or the investigators correctly identify the murder and the evidence and means that prove their guilt. The witness knows which players are playing the murderer and accomplice are but not which role they have. The witness will try to lead the investigators towards these two subtly because if they are caught and killed at the end of the game the murder goes free. SETUP If the cards chosen when a player attempts to solve the crime are the correct "Key Evidence" and "Means of Murder", the game ends immediately and the Forensic Scientist and Investigators (as well as the Witness) win. This bite-sized variant features less bloodthirsty lycanthropes than the original, as the werewolves’ aim is simply to win by lying low. During the night phase, players take it in turns to perform actions, depending on their roles. A seer has the power to look at someone’s role card, but other characters like the robber and troublemaker can switch these around during the night. If any investigator has not used their accusation by the end of the third round of the investigation phase it is forfeited. ENDING THE GAME As the game master, the Forensic Scientist holds the solution to the crime. They are responsible for assisting the Investigators in identifying the “Key Evidence” and “Means of Murder.” When an Investigator does that successfully, the crime is solved and the Forensic Scientist and the Investigators win the game. I’m a bit of a Resistance apologist. It was one of the first modern board games I really enjoyed. I’ve played it easily over 100 times and got to the point where people were attempting triple-bluffs with two different friend groups. I kind of burned out on the game after a while, through sheer over-play, but I still think it’s brilliant. It’s one of the most elegant games ever made. It takes the social deduction idea , distills it down to its essential parts, and somehow emerges as something deeper and more compelling than its peers.
