About this deal

Okay onto the actual rum. The first thing I notice about the rum is that as soon as the cork is popped it exhibits that El Dorado smell. Inspite of the numerous other rums which use DDL rums as their base or entire blend, nothing smells quite like an El Dorado rum. Sweet, almost flowery but very difficult to place, with light whifts of brown sugar. The ceremony took place on the appointment of a new ruler. Before taking office, he spent some time secluded in a cave, without women, forbidden to eat salt, or to go out during daylight. The first journey he had to make was to go to the great lagoon of Guatavita, to make offerings and sacrifices to the demon which they worshipped as their god and lord. During the ceremony which took place at the lagoon, they made a raft of rushes, embellishing and decorating it with the most attractive things they had. They put on it four lighted braziers in which they burned much moque, which is the incense of these natives, and also resin and many other perfumes. The lagoon was large and deep, so that a ship with high sides could sail on it, all loaded with an infinity of men and women dressed in fine plumes, golden plaques and crowns. ... As soon as those on the raft began to burn incense, they also lit braziers on the shore, so that the smoke hid the light of day. Upon looking at the 12 year old it immediately comes to mind that the rum is definitely slightly lighter than its 15 year old counterpart. I assume this is down to it spending less time in the bourbon barrels, amongst other things it is noted that these are very different rums from different stills etc. Upon tasting it is also noticeable that it isn’t quite as oaky as the 15 year old. It’s sweeter with more delicate fruit flavours coming to the fore. Rather than rum soaked raisins it’s more just raisin. The differences between the two are quite subtle but are evident enough to my palate

This article is about the lost city of gold. For other uses, see El Dorado (disambiguation). The zipa, a mythical tribal chief of the native Muisca people, was said to cover his body in gold dust, and from his raft offer treasures to the Guatavita goddess in the middle of the sacred lake. This old Muisca tradition became the origin of the legend of El Dorado.

The presentation for the 12 yr, the 15 yr and the 21 yr old El Dorado Rums includes a squat smokey opaque brown bottle which has a funky old world charm and which looks great on my rum shelf. I like the fact that each rum in the series arrives in a smartly coloured display box which helps to protect the spirit from the deleterious effects of light. Finally each is closed with a quality cork topper which for me is the final requirement for a quality presentation. In the Glass 9.5/10 An El Dorado Demerara White Rum aged for at least 3 years in oak casks, then double filtered through natural charcoal to remove the colour. This pretty much rounds off my El Dorado collection. The 3,5,12,15 and 21 have now been reviewed. Time will tell if any of the Single Cask, Spiced or Overproof offerings ever get a review. Time and Geography anyway as if I could actually get certain El Dorado rums I wouldn’t hesitate….. Drye, Willie. "El Dorado Legend Snared Sir Walter Raleigh". National Geographic. National Geographic Society. Archived from the original on 18 November 2010 . Retrieved 15 February 2019. To my mind, this incarnation of El Dorado 12 is better than its predecessor but isn't going to wow the masses in the same way. I also think that, at this price point, it is one of the better rums around. With that said, I'd happily a bit more for a 12 year old with a greater percentage of the pot still. This would probably put it in line with quality and price of some other good rums (I want to mention Doorly's 12, though I've not had it recently, so don't quote me on that).

Blind-Tasting Guess: All in all, I assume this is what hooks newbies to rum, in a good way. I assume this is the new 12 year old since the kinship to the first one is evident to me. Retrieved 15 February 2019.Note: The name El Padrino fits perfectly as a premium aged oaky rums such as El Dorado 12 may truly be called the Godfather of Rums! The Muisca people occupied the highlands of Cundinamarca and Boyacá departments of Colombia in two migrations from outlying lowland areas, one starting c. 1270 BC, and a second between 800 BC and 500 BC. At those times, other more ancient civilizations also flourished in the highlands. The Muisca Confederation was as advanced as [ clarify] the Aztec, Maya and Inca civilizations. [2] Palate: There is a big first wave of the spices and toffee, accompanied by a slight alcoholic sharpness. This is not as complex as the nose suggested, but it is really pleasant. In the finish, there is some astringent wood, but not as bitter as the first one. It fades into lingering vanilla pudding with a slight warmth. The palate/rum finishes slightly flat, which is probably due to some adulteration.
